L'Auberge Espagnole is the kind of movie that gives "feel good film" a good name. No sappy plot pulling at heartstrings, no star crossed lovers that finally come together, L'Aurberge is an interesting story of one year in a young man's life.
Comedic view of the European Union by nelsonthree ,Aug 25 '05
Pros: Well written, produced and acted. Interesting sets and camera angles. Cons: Fluency in all the languages would further enhance the enjoyment.
This film is a lighthearted parable of the compromises faced by member nations of the European Union as they strive for success with their new economic model. In the story, young adults, each from a separate European country, pool their respective resources to rent a Barcelona apartment. Although, each can readily accept the necessity of cooperative behavior, they still have their individual customs, desires and national personalities. The humor derives from the contact points of these differences, as well as the individual and collective efforts to maintain the union. The protagonist, a French economics student, is likable, his conflicts engaging, and the subplots are interesting enough to propel the plot along a very enjoyable path. This film is light fare which leaves you both entertained and nourished.
