Make sure you read the fine print and check EVERYTHING!

I sold cars for about a year in between career building jobs. Needless to say up front, I found out that a sales position was not for me :) However this experience did lend me greater insight on how dealerships and salespeople work. So here is what I learned from my brief experience with the car sales industry:
First of all, the idea of being able to talk a dealer down thousands of dollars on a new car is basically a myth. The dealer maybe has between 1,200 and 2,000 dollars built into the price of the car invoice. And they do have to make something on the car, so they cant discount all of it. If you want to really talk numbers with a dealer, go for a newly used or used car. My second car was a 1996 which I bought in 1997, and I was able to save a tremendous amount of money.
Secondly, you want to check everything. My brother just bought a car and found out after the fact that the drivers side door had been re-painted and was hung slightly askew. A good indication that the car has been in an accident. This is something that you really want to look out for.
Also, you want to make sure that everything on the car is fixed before you take it. This was my experience with the car I just recently bought. The part of the car that was not fixed was not something that would make it stop running, but it is something that will eventually have to be fixed and will cost me money instead of costing the dealership money. I don't think that it is necessary to have an outside mechanic come in and look the car over, but be sure to get something in writing before you leave, that anything the comes up within a certain number of days will be fixed free of charge by them. Most dealerships will offer a good warranty, however, some things are not covered, and its these things that you want to be sure will be fixed if something goes wrong.
Good luck and happy car hunting!
