American versus Import: a Detroit-biased opinion
Mar 16 '00
It's no longer "politically correct" to advocate for American made (well, ok, at least American BRAND)automobiles - that went out of style in the early '80s. But I still think that people who are considering the major purchase of buying a car should also consider the overall impact that their purchase makes.
As a young person growing up in the Detroit area I personally observed the economic impact that consumer choices had on the automobile industry at that time ('70s - '80s). I watched as people were laid off in droves, as fathers haplessly tried to figure out what to do instead of work for GM, Ford, Chrysler - something they'd been doing for years and years. I watched as local businesses went under because nobody could afford to shop, eat lunch out, etc. I watched as the Big Three finally heard the message from American consumers and greatly improved their product lines and developed more fuel efficient autos.
I watched as a major Michigan city (Flint) literally died...
Now, I don't recommend that people buy anything that they consider inferior - we're talking about shelling out a LOT of money and any auto purchase should be fully researched before signing on the dotted line.
What I AM saying is that those who think first of buying Toyota, Honda, Mitsubishi and the like - take a second look at the American brands - they've come a LONG way as far as style, safety and quality. And you never know, you may be helping your neighbor keep his job!
