Many writers would love to someday write something of such importance and signifigance that it one day be considered one of the 100 best novles of all time. One writer that has been lucky to have, not only one but, two of his books listed as one of the “100 best novels” is Ernest Hemmingway. His book A Farewell to Arms is ranked as 73 this list (The Sun Also Rises is ranked 45th on this same list).
Other noticible books that are featured in this list includes: The Great Gatsby, which is ranked number 2, The Catcher in the Rye, ranked 64th, and Heart of Darkness, ranked 67th. Wtihout a doubt A Farewell to Arms is a book that deserevers the recognition that some of these other great books have received.
In my opinion A Farewell to Arms deserves to be ranked better than Heart of Darkness and The Great Gatsby. Even though I wouldn’t agree that A Farewell to Arms should be ranked number two instead of The Great Gatsby I feel that The Great Gatsby was ranked a little high. The stroy line of A Farewell to Arms was much deeper than that of either Heart of Darkness or The Great Gatsby; both of the endings in these books seemd unfullfilling. When Kurtz and Gatsby both died in the ending I was left feeling “So....what’s the point then?”; since both of their deaths came really unexpected it seemed like something that was forced into the story. A Farewell to Arms had a great, but truly sad, ending which left me satisfied in what i had read. Hemmingways great detailed writing deserves a place with literature’s finenest.
The story deals with an American ambulance driver that falls in love with a English nurse... The book goes through their courtship all the way to when they fianally declare their love for each other. The book gives ver accurate details about World War I. Hemingway was acutally in WWI for those of you who didn't know, he was the first american wounded in action. The language of the book is simply beautiful and adds to the greatness of the story.
The overall theme of this book was great; i think the message that Hemingway was trying to pass along was that love can help ease the effects of such things as war but it can not protect one from the harshness of reality. It's all so true...even i have come to learn this in real life. The ending is truly sad and clearly shows us that life is even love can't protect us from what happens in the real world.
