Gateway - Good, but there is better!

I purchased a 350 MHz Gateway computer back in June of 1998. It was pretty close to the top end at the time, but is pretty slow compared to todays standards. Overall, it has been a pretty good computer. I have had a few mishaps though.
The first problem was the video card. I was playing a game and it would lock up at the same point every time. I borrowed a video card from a friend's computer and put it in mine. Then the game worked fine. I put the original card back in and the problems returned. I thought, "Hey, the video card must be the problem!" That was not what Gateway tech support told me. There response was, "That is not reason enough to believe that the video card is bad. We will not support third party software." What? That was a crock!! So, to make a long story short, I purchased my own new video card for $125 and the problem was solved.
The next problem I had with the machine was the CD-ROM drive. While playing music CD's, it would skip and start going crazy. Gateway's tech support was much more helpful with this issue and my new drive was at my door in 3 days. Not bad.
My computer gets used every day for work and I must say that I have been pretty satisfied. However, I have been more satisfied with the Dell computer that I also have. No problems at all to date!! I would recommend Dell as my first choice for a new computer purchase to anyone!! If you want, you may also read my review on my Dell computer. Good luck on your new computer purchase!!
