| op1500's Full Review: Creative Labs Sound Blaster Live! Value Sound Card |
I decided to retire my AWE 64, but had no idea what I wanted. The only sure factor was that the replacement would be a Creative Labs...something. The live series was less than a week on the shelves at the time. Well Creative had not failed me yet (a history that goes back to the first Sound Blaster, which I still have) and the SB Live Value was chosen. Why? Price? Compatibility? Awesome sound? Nope, it was the only one on the shelf at the store I went to. I have no regrets what so ever with this one. Creative has yet again lived up to every expectation I have about their products.
The install was not as painless as the AWE 64 (yeah, yeah...apples and blueberries) this is to say I actually had to use the install disk. The second SB Live I bought is in a dual boot machine using Win98 and Red Hat 6.X. While Linux did not recognize it right off, Creative was kind enough to post some beta drivers for Linux. A couple of phone calls to some very helpful (but adamant that this was not official support) customer service types provided my Linux box with sound.
Now the good stuff. If you have or are going to get one and have a good stereo close by, hook this baby up. I wanted to see what would happen if I pumped another 250 watts/channel into the output signal...well I'm not allowed to do that anymore. Seems that the next door types don't enjoy sharing my MP3's.
This is the best sound card I have ever owned. Other than the Linux questions I have never had to call Creative for problems, this is over 10 years worth of Creative sound cards folks.
