| brownshugd's Full Review: Agfa SnapScan 1212p Flatbed Scanner |
So I suppose my fellow consumers would wish to read about the quality of completed scan jobs or perhaps what level of ease this product was installed and used at. Or perhaps we should ask the more important question: is the hunk of garbage good for anything other than a countertop?! Yeah, you can use it as paperweight, too.
The Agfa Snapscan 1212p was purchased late last year by my younger brother as a gift for my father’s home office. He hooked up the hardware and installed the software and was ready to go. Poor dad couldn’t get the machine to cooperate, though, receiving an error message saying that the scanner was not connected or not on. Not altogether uncommon for my dad and I’ll admit, he’s more computer illiterate than I am often times. With this in mind, we transferred the scanner to my own computer and re-connected the whole thing. I set it up myself rather quickly and prepared to scan a 4” x 6” color photo.
Following the step-by-step directions, I installed the accompanying program called ScanWise and proceeded to scan my picture. My first attempt was successfully completed and saved to disk. I had edited and adjusted my picture, correcting any photographical errors (ex. red eyes). And it was good. My second go at it was not quite as good. I began to receive the same error message, which indicated the scanner was either not plugged in or not turned on. I already knew everything had been tightly attached and I was staring directly at the green power-indicator light. So I turned off some of the peripherals (the scanner and the printer) and then turned them back on. The scanner warmed up as normal and I tried the process again. It worked. Now I’m confused but, hey, whatever. I continued to do a few more photos until, again, it sent the error message. I repeated my little trick from before, however, this time it failed. And I’m sorry to report the stupid thing hasn’t worked since.
My dad had previously called the technical support line for aid with no positive results. Mind you, Agfa only offers one toll-free customer service line and it is free only between particular hours. Additionally, I sent an email to the Agfa online support group declaring our dilemma. I have yet to hear a word and that was sent over one month ago now.
The bottom line is picture perfect: despite numerous testimonials and positive reviews on Agfa products, this specific scanner has had many complaints. Upon doing a little research online, I apparently am not the only dissatisfied customer awaiting an Agfa representative’s personal reply. Even for less than $100, this product is not worth the headache that ultimately ensues after it’s purchase. Pass this “bargain” by.
