You'll Never Fill That...at least not right away.
Oct 23 '00
When we purchased our computer about 3 years ago, the standard size for a hard drive was approximately 3-5 gigabytes. We were going a little bigger on everything on our custom computer and opted to buy an 8.4 gigabyte drive. They told us that this would be plenty, "There's no way you'll ever fill that." Wrong. Sure, it did take quite awhile at first but there has been times when we have had just over a gig of space left. We have reformatted the computer a few times and I have noticed that each time the hard drive fills up faster, even though I watch how much I put on. So, if that is not enough hard drive space what is?
The truth is that with games getting more graphical, computer use sky-rocketing, and internet downloads increasing hard drive fill up much faster than ever before(obviously). You need to ask yourself what you want to use the computer for and go from there. Below are a few basic models of the type of hard drive for the type of computer user.
The Gamer
By far, this is the computer user that will require the most about of hard drive space. Currently there are games out that I have seen that take up as much as one hundred megabytes(one-tenth of a gigabyte) all by themselves. That is ignoring internet patches and/or add-ons. Depending on how many games they actually plan on buying, this user would want about a twenty-gigabyte hard drive. One always prefer to have plenty of extra space. It helps to speed up the computer, though I have to admit I am not totally sure why.
The Internet Junky
This user, like the gamer tends to use much of the hard drive. Still, it is a lot less than that of a gamer. This is because people usually download thing off of the internet for trial run purposes or instant satisfaction. They usually end up deleting much of what they download anyway but files are always left behind. The probably would need about fifteen gigabytes of hard drive space to access and save everything they want.
The Student/Worker
Depending on what type of programs this user uses, he/she could get away with an five to ten gigabyte drive. If this person only uses typing programs then they need very little space whereas someone using paint programs would most likely take up much more space. Then, if their projects include creating or testing games, however rare this may be, they would need close to the same amount of space as the gamer.
On a similar topic, most people are unaware that hard drives have a speed. They let your computer "sift" through your information faster. If purchasing a faster hard drive then it is ok to cut down the hard drive space just a little.
I assume most people and their families are a mixture of the stated types or a completely different type altogether. I guess it is up to your judgement to decide how much you slant towards one type but remember to leave plenty of room for later additions. Regardless of type of use I would suggest getting the biggest drive they have. Even though my recommendations above are probably slightly over what you may actually need right now, you probably will fill it eventually. Think of it as an investment.
