Do you remember Junoir High?

Jun 07 '00 (Updated Jun 12 '00)

The more I think about this topic the more it is starting to sound like the manufacturers in question are like a group of adolescent teenagers , comparing things that they probably should not be comparing especially at that age. And some of these web site reviewers act like the teenage girls that surround this group of boys as they do these things. Don't get me wrong I am grateful to these web sites for doing such in depth reviews of the products in question, including extensive testing. But who is actually measuring the actual performance of a video card by these statistics?

I believe that the real way to measure the performance of a video card is to install it, and run it as if it were your own. Use the same applications the rest of the world would use under the same load circumstances. The fact of the matter is that not many of us go home and run Quake 3 tests at all resolutions or 3Dmark 2000. Most of the time the best way for a product to prove itself is to physically see the performance and image quality in a real instance. For example I recently read reviews of the newest products in question. The test system a p3 800mhz with PC133 ram. Not everyone has these 800mhz plus systems and most don't have the PC133 ram. So how can these reviews portray results that relate to the consumer. And what about us Athlon lovers? Obviously the performance will be different on both chips as well.

In fact most people who are upgrading to a new video card are in trying to save an older system for another few months or so, unless they are hard core gamers and simply are trying to keep up with the times. I agree with my fellow Epinoin members who said that the rivalry between 3DFX and Nvidia leads to competition , and competition leads to a accelerated growth in the industry and the market concerned. Besides not everyone can read through these reviews and understand what they are even taking about when they start to get extremely technical. Most of the people that make up the computer retail sales are not always going to understand the jargon used by the technically inclined.

Now to cater to the topic that this review is written under, I will take my stand on this 3D WAR at hand. 3DFX has been the leader in the graphics accelerator market for some time now. They have earned the respect of millions in this time and gained many devoted fans. My opinion is that 3DFX will continue to give Nvidia a run for its money and graphic technology will increase rapidly over the next few years. A graphics card is a personal preference mine being the Voodoo line of graphic cards, and only you can make the choice. But please go and visually see both cards in question in action , with the same game running both times. If at all possible on the same system with the only difference being the video card. Then you make the choice!! I will leave you with this thought to ponder upon.... Nvidia uses 1 GPU on their GeForce and GeForce2 boards, 3DFX uses two VSA-100 chips on the Voodoo5 5500 Agp and four on the Voodoo5 6000 AGP. Is more better? It definitely divides the work load though doesn't it?
