I am a college student and was looking for an affordable, but functional PC. I was excited about this computer because of it's affordable price and it's DVD option. However, I warn you: THIS IS NOT A POWERFUL MACHINE. I picked up an eTower 366id and a 15" eView monitor for $525 after the $75 mail-in-rebate. I haven't had a problem with it yet. I've found it quite functional for tasks including word processing, internet surfing, photo-editing and DVD watching. There is a very slight compatibility problem with the Dragon Naturally Speaking word processing program and the sound card that comes with this system.
For better performance, I highly recommend upgrading the RAM to at least 96 MB. The ports on the towers do not line up with the outer case making only three of the four PCI/ISA ports available. The video memory is not upgradable. This is not a gamers machine. Microsoft Word does not come in the software package.I haven't had the need to call tech support, but I hear that department needs much improvement. Speakers are absolutely pitiful. If you're going to buy an eMachines, pick up one with a DVD player. It makes the whole system worthwhile.
I recommend this eMachines if you are a liberal arts (not engineering!) college student or are looking for a second computer for your home. I've found that Costco offers the best deal on eMachine computers and offers a free extended warranty. This computer manufacturer is often featured in the "Free PC" ads, which offer you a $400 rebate if you sign up for 3 years with the Internet service provider. I guess all I can say is that I own one and have been very happy with it.
