HP's 9600 series, a good buy
Feb 05 '00
On December 15th Hewlett Packard released its new 9600 series pavilions, and since then they've been harder to find than a Rabbi in a Turkish brothel (sorry, but I liked the way it sounded). These computers are selling like mad, and for good reason too.
The computers come at speeds between 650Mhz and 800Mhz, and feature both Pentium and Athelon processors. The Athelon being sold through the club store model 9686, and the 9680 and 9690 come with PIII's. All of the computers come with a USB Keyboard and mouse (see the 9690 review for details on that). 128MB of SDRAM which is upgradeable to 756MB. there is also a 40Gb hard drive on all models as well. A 8X DVD and 4X2X20 CD-RW is also featured on all models. Finally an nVidia graphics card is used.
As far as upgradeability goes, all 3 are the same, there are 2 open memory slots, 1 open front shelf, 1 open internal shelf, 1 PCI slot, and an ISA (who still uses these?). The down side, is there is no AGP on these systems, so your stuck with the nVidia thats in there. That could be a down side, but as far as I can see. Its the only one.
These are some sweet machines, but as mentioned. A little difficult to find. That goes double for the 9690.
