| ptriplett's Full Review: Dell Inspiron 5000 R600LG |
I now work 2 days a week in an office and the rest of the week at home, while watching my toddler. I am a designer/drafter and needed a machine with a good monitor (and of course, speed and space). I wanted a laptop so I could work inside or out, upstairs or down ... wherever my son decided he wanted to play (and behave)! Since I do computer drafting, I wanted a good monitor ... the 15" screen on this laptop is the best I've ever seen (almost better than my 17" on my desktop)!
I went with a Dell because they had the best machine for the money (from the research that I did) and I wanted a machine from a company with a good reputation. I could've gotten a cheaper machine a Sears or some electronics store ... but you get what you pay for sometimes. I'd previously bought machines from Gateway and been extremely pleased, but they couldn't compete with the Dell Inspiron series. I had very good service while going through the purchase process. I got a price online and went line-by-line through the quote with an operator (to decide what I actually wanted and needed). The operator was extremely patient and put me on hold repeatedly to double check answers to my questions. For some reason I actually got a better price by talking to the operator (so check both ways before making the online purchase).
I received the laptop after about 3 weeks (they estimated 4), and was able to turn it on and play around that night. I run AutoCAD Architectural Desktop 2i (using the touchpad ... not an external mouse) very efficiently and quickly. It handles the program beautifully (the program is very much 3D intensive).
To explain the higher price: My machine has 10G memory, 64Mb RAM, 15" monitor SVGA+, I purchased an external CD-RW (by HP, which works very well) and the MS Office 2000 business edition, and probably some other things I can't think of immediately.
My only peeve ... if you don't buy the computer carrying bag from Dell, take the machine with you when bag shopping ... it's larger than the average laptop and doesn't fit in most bags!
Happy computing!
