| Cyph's Full Review: Debian GNU |
Overview: Debian is a Linux distribution created with advanced users in mind. Linux is an open-source operating system created by Linus Torvalds, and is recognized by software developers and hosting companies worldwide.
Installation: installation from the CD set ordered from Walnut Creek CD-ROM was fast and easy. The procedure detected most of my hardware, and finished without a problem. The whole install didn't take over 15 minutes on an AMD Athlon 800 Mhz system with 256 MB RAM.
First boot: the system booted in less than 30 seconds, but it wasn't pre-configured at all, so it definitely isn't something that someone new to the Linux world would enjoy. Lots, and I mean, LOTS of interesting open-source software was installed by default, including Apache, which is a huge plus.
Playtime: I compiled all of my favorite software on Debian without the problem, and decided to give the Debian package format a try. I downloaded a few DEB packages, and installed them. Nice, fast and smooth, much better than Red Hat's RPM format.
Support: since I didn't want to actually pay for the support, I decided to visit the official Debian channel on IRC. I came up with a bunch of stupid newbie questions, just to test them. I got a prompt reply, from more than one user... but of course it can't be as good as phone support.
Bottom line: If you are an advanced Linux user, then this is the distribution for you. If you are just looking at Linux, trying to give it a first try, I suggest Mandrake or SuSE. I'll stick to Debian myself :)
