Gateways: The keyboards do not seem to last.
Jun 28 '00
Let me begin by saying I do not own a Gateway. But I have spent 4 years at a college which owns many! The computers themselves are ok. Nothing really all that special. We are hooked up to a fiber optic backbone so they are relatively fast on the net. But they are college computers
The keyboards and mice die really fast. Nothing more agrivating than to have the system start beeping cause a key is stuck or have your entire paper covered in one letter due to the same reason. I personally bought a HP Pavilion and rarely go to the lab now due to that. If I go there it is only to check my e-mail. I do any serious business on my computer.
If you want a short lived cheap toy then buy a Gateway. Like most other manufacturers Gateway offers AOL (Read A OH HELL) and other services bundled with their systems. Do yourself a favor and get either one of the new free internet service providers (ISPS) or a local one. I almost guarantee you will get better service.
Personally if I have to work in the lab and have my choice I would use a Tangent computer rather than a Gateway any day!
