Gigabytes? Yikes! But how many?!

Dec 20 '99

Beginners to even advanced users of computers often have trouble deciding which hardware components best fit their needs. One of these hardware components is the hard drive. New computers nowadays hardly come below a 6.4 Gig size, and some have gone way past 20 Gigs!! The question is: "What size of a hard drive should I really get?" But in fact, the real question is, "What are my uses for this computer?". Regardless if one is a computer expert or just a beginner, an appropriate hard drive size can be estimated. If a person is going to be using their computer for graphic-intensive art design, then one should get a large hard drive. This is because art-type files take up large amounts of space. A 20.1+ Gig or so would suit just fine. However, if a person is going to use a computer for a "few" games and just some applications, then there is no real since in buying such a massive hard drive. A 6.4 Gig hard drive is somewhat hard to get by these days though when we have new games that take up 400-500 Megs of your hard drive each. My suggestion: a 8.0 Gig or 10.1 Gig should work fine for these types of users. In conclusion, if you are in the market of deciding which hard drive is best for you, ask yourself the question, "What are my uses for this computer?" If you can answer that question, you'll have a good idea as to what size you should purchase.
