Gateway to frustration: Don't say you weren't warned!!

Several friends had purchased Gateway computers with reasonable results- so what could possibly go wrong? Answer: EVERYTHING!! If you're thinking of Gateway- save yourself while you still can!

I went to a Gateway Country store nearby selecting a mid-range unit for small business use. Home it came in a Pandora's box disguised with cow markings. The start-up screen should have read "Abandon hope all ye who enter here!"

Nothing about the computer worked from the DVD drive to the hard drive to the sound board. After dozens of hours with "technical non-support" and several swap-outs of defective components I finally returned the unit to the Gateway Country store where I bought it.

I was advised the computer would be shipped back the following day and I would receive a refund within a week. Yeah.. right! After 3 weeks Gateway still had no record of having received the computer despite the local store's insistence it had been shipped. Several more weeks of finger pointing but no refund and no computer.

I finally walked into the store manager's office and advised him I wanted a refund check within 24 hours or I would be knocking on the door again with the local television "Action Reporter" with cameras running to do an expose' on Gateway computers. Suddenly he became VERY motivated to get me my money back.

Coincidentally (NOT!) FedEx appeared at my door first thing the next morning with a refund check. If you're looking for a headache- try Gateway. Otherwise... look elsewhere!
