The Bigger the Better...?

Apr 23 '00

We've all heard the phrase, "The Bigger the Better". But is "Too Big" bad in a case of getting a hard drive? Yes and no. Now, you all are thinking, "Walter, what you wrote doesn't make any sense!"

Computers on the market today have hard drives over twenty gigabytes. Twenty gigabytes is a lot of space, but do you really need it. Yes, you do. The more space the better is how I think of it.

When I first bought my Packard Bell system complete for $3000 dollars a handful of years ago, it came with a 1.2 GB hard drive. I remember saying, I will never use all of this space. When time grew on, so did applications. Some now eat up 500 MB without even blinking. The problem will only get worse and worse with time going on.

I had to upgrade to 4.4 GB by buying a Western Digital 3.2 GB for around one hundred bucks. Not a bad deal. With all that added space, I no longer have problems in the size category.

If you know for sure you cannot use twenty or so gigs of hard drive space in computer's lifetime, go with a zip drive or CD-RW. They are the new floppies in the industry. Remember, just yesterday we are using those old 3 1/2 inch disks that held 1.44 MB of space and loving it. No more though!

Have a Happy Easter everyone. I have just added a search engine on my member page, so try it out.
