| valentino's Full Review: Abit VA6 |
Abit's VA6 is a very solid platform for your system. I bought it to replace my socket 7 and upgrade to a Pentium III. First thing I noticed when unpacking the box was the instruction book. Not a flimsy little CD-liner notes looking thing, but an actual manual. To boot, the manual is also written in very clear English (not the broken, confusing English most parts come with anymore). Next thing I noticed was the sturdiness of the board. Not a cheap, flimsy board! You'll have no fear of cracking the board installing DIMMs, ACP, or PCI cards after its mounted in the chassis.
No need to go over the specs - those are available everywhere, but I will highlight a few. The board has an onboard Sound Blaster Pro DAC. I'm not a big fan of onboard audio or video, but this is the exception. The onboard audio performs flawlessly and every bit as well as the Turtle Beach Malibu card I own. The other nice detail is the jumperless design of the board. Everything is controlled through the BIOS. There is a jumper to enable/disable the onboard sound, but that's about it. This is a good point for folks like me who like things simple and user-friendly.
For those folks who like to overclock, the jumperless set up isn't so great. You can overclock a PPGA CPU through the interface card that makes it compatible for a slot I, but I have no idea how you would go about overclocking a Slot I CPU since the BIOS detects it & will halt the system if a different value is entered into the BIOS than what is read from the processor. But, this review isn't based on the overclockability of the board.
