I decided to Run 2 Drives.

Mar 14 '00

My Decision
The drive I have now is a Western Digital Caviar 8.4GB. One year ago I thought it was big enough, but since Christmas, I have gotten several more games and a lot of them want to install all of their video on to your hard drive for better performance. Now my 8.4 had only 1.4GB free and it was time to add a new one. How big should I go? I decided on the Western Digital Caviar 20.4GB, with the 8.4GB already installed, I now have 28.8GB. Is this enough hard drive or will I have to upgrade in a year or two? I hope this will do for the next 2 to 3 years, but things change so fast on the computers, a regular hard drive maybe obsolete next year or even next month.

Western Digital has the easiest and best running drives you can get. This is my third one and it was easy to install. I unplugged the cable from my old drive into my new drive, and then I plugged the middle connector from the EIDE cable, into my old drive, so I could run both drives. The new drive was set up as the master drive, so all I had to change was my old drive to the slave position. They provide software that runs almost by itself. My BIOS did automatically pick up both drives without any problems.

I know there are faster drives running at 7200 rpm, but for the same size (20.4GB) we are looking at almost an extra $75.00. In time I guess they will all come down in price. This drive lists for $269 and I got it for less than $200. It seems fast to me and it is almost 3 times a big as my second drive. I recommend Western Digital for all your hard drives.

The retail packaging, which included an extensive manual, a fold-out installation guide, an Ultra DMA/66 cable, EZ-Drive on floppy disk, and mounting screws. Western Digital comes with a three-year warranty. In the event of a drive failure, Western Digital will provide a replacement drive.
.
The Western Digital Caviar 20.4GB runs at 5,400 rpm with a 2MB buffer to improve performance. The drive offers up 19,460MB of storage. Average random-access of 16ms.

How big should your next Hard Drive be?
This is a decision only you can make. First is your old drive almost full, if so I recommend a new one of at least twice the size of the one you have now and leave your old one in as a second or backup drive. If your current drive is 2GB or smaller, I recommend at least 10Gb or more. Second do you load a lot of programs and games on your hard drive? If your answer is yes, I recommend the biggest one that your pocket book can afford.
