Creative Products Can Be Misleading

The Bottom Line: If you want a Creative Labs Sound system, but your speakers are not made by them start doing a lot of home work!

When I scored this card I thought I would be in heaven. Especially with all its features how could I go wrong? Well it turns out you can go way wrong. Creative is a tricky company. They have great selling features that are hard to beat, what they don't tell you are that everything they sell is meant to be used with everything they advertise up front. For example, if you buy their lowest of sound cards all the way up to their grandest Platinum EX2 setup, as long as you use their speaker systems you will have very little if any problems. On the other hand you use a set of Klipsch speakers that are probably the finest computer speakers you could buy you will run in to all sorts of problems. The problem is even though the cards say Dolby Digital 5.1 What their really saying is make sure you get a Creative Labs Dolby Digital 5.1 decoder to go along with it, and buy one of their speaker system and your good to go. On the other hand, if you have the Klipsch's you have three multi colored plugs. You can't plug those plugs into the front end of the Platinum’s because all there is-is Toshlinks, RCA jacks and 1/4 inch jacks. You can't even use them on their decoders. There is only one solution, but they don’t talk about it much. I went out and bought a Klipsch Dolby Digital 5.1 Decoder. I could have run a Toshlink cable to one of the Platinum’s, but I don’t own one. The solution is under Audigy Accessories. They sell an I/O card. That card will attach to the back of any Audigy card and it has all the Toshlinks and coax connectors one needs to the road of happiness. My point is Creative Labs could have said this up front on all the boxes that aren’t Platinum’s and given the buyer an heads up on what to expect to get everything working. That disturbs me.
