My Dad tried to force me to attend .... (Reply to this comment)

...an elite private college in the sticks of New England, so I naturally refused even after getting in, and opted for a major urban university in Philadelphia I only partially learned a lesson from that. One of my sons opted for San Diego State over Sonoma State even though my wife and I leaned heavily toward the latter, and let him know it. He also refused to consider applying to the the UC system instead of the Cal State system even though his excellent SATs and strong GPA made him a slam dunk for the former.
What did we know? He's happy as a clam at SDSU -- HIS pick (which I reviewed separately very early on in my epinions career, happily eating crow in public). He's getting straight A's, working harder than he ever did in high school, maturing like crazy, and is on track for going to Law School.
Parents, listen to your kids. Good advice here.

Great Review! (Reply to this comment)
by viper1963
I have a lot of friends whose parents 'chose' their college educations. Many of my friends colleges were already chosen in elementary school!
Many of my Chinese friends had no choice but to apply at Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Brown, MIT, UC Berkeley, Cal Tech, etc. It was really sad. Their field was study was determined by familial duty and respect so the student had no choice.
Although my friends did want to enter the medical, law or business fields; they weren't allowed to decide what college to attend. This created some animosity but they could never question their parents decision.
Those same friends are now allowing their children to decide which career to pursue and which college they wish to attend! Talk about culture gaps! LOL
Great review!

If a parent is paying the bill, they do have some say in the decision. But if a child really doesn't want to go to the college that the parent wants them to, then they shouldn't try to force them. It will make the child's college years miserable!
And yes, parents who try to control their child's life as a student usually continue to do so throughout their adult lives. I have seen it happen too many times!

...those parents who want to control their children's lives, even as adults. I do think that if parents pay the tuition, they should have some say-so in the selection of the college; but otherwise they can't dictate which college the child chooses.
Great article! You really nailed the crucial points.
