Cons: Newsprint, sales department: They call and call, trying to get you to subscribe.
The Bottom Line: A useful, but not indispensable, source of local news for San Diego and surrounding areas. Beware, the subscription department will hound you constantly if you unsubscribe.

| imbrium's Full Review: San Diego Union-Tribune |
The San Diego Union Tribune is a useful news source for people who live in San Diego county. I've subscribed to it off and on for about 3 years. It has several strengths and one major weakness which I've outlined below.
Useful Website
The San Diego Union Tribune has a very useful website, signonsandiego.com. I use it whenever I need to look up the phone number for a local restaurant or business because this site almost always has the phone number. You don't have to be a subscriber to use it.
Local Information
The Union-Tribune manages to strike a decent balance between local, state, national and international news, although its main concentration is local news. The Union-Tribune provides good coverage when it comes to local stories.
News & Tidbits
I enjoy the "A" section, which has the "hard news" as well as strange and interesting tidbits from around the nation and world. The "hard news" is readily available from other sources, but I rarely see the "tidbits" anywhere else. They may bore some readers because they tend to cover fairly minor news items, but I find most of them quirky and intriguing.
The Business Section
Considering the number of tech companies in San Diego, I recommend the business section for any San Diegans who follow the stock market or tech sector. On some days, it seems like the entire business section is devoted to the triumphs and trials of local tech companies. Definitely a useful read for local techies.
The Union-Tribune Sales Department, or: Release the Hounds
A few years ago, I let a door-to-door newspaper sales boy pressure me into subscribing to the Union Tribune. I didn't have time to read the paper, so I unsubscribed after 3 months. Immediately afterwards, the sales department began calling...and calling...and calling, to try to get me to come back. They do offer low introductory rates, however, so I end up unsubscribing and eventually re-subscribing a few times a year. If you are a subscriber who plans to unsubscribe, plan to stop answering the phone between 5-8 PM everyday.
Weekend-only Subscription Option
As mentioned above, I really don't have time to read the paper and I got guilty about having to recycle that many unread newspapers. I did miss the Sunday coupons and sales ads, though, so I ended up re-subscribing to the weekend-only package. I really wanted to receive only Sunday, but that wasn't an option. Beware, though, the sales department will call and offer to give you the Monday through Friday issues free. From experience, this means "free for the first subscription period...after that, we bill you for the full weekly rate". Don't agree unless you really want to get that much newsprint on your hands.
