ABC The Scrapbook Way!

Apr 11 '01

The Bottom Line You and your child can help make the alphabet fun for your toddler!

Scrapbooking is my newest obsession, and I've had a lot of fun working on pages for my son. Looking over old pictures, and finding ways to incorporate them on a scrapbook page has brought back many memories. My favorite part, though, is being creative! I love coming up with titles, finding that perfect sticker, and coloring in the lettering. But, is scrapbooking just for moms? No way! You can not only have your kids join in on the fun, but you can make a great learning tool for your toddlers!

The idea is to make a scrapbook with each page devoted to the alphabet. You'll want each letter spotlighted in the middle, and pictures, stickers, and more letters surrounding it. You can also use the numbers 1-10, or simple words, colors, or animals as your theme...whatever you prefer!

The supplies:
If you are planning on using actual photos in your scrapbook, you'll want to make sure all your supplies are acid and lignen-free for better preservation

1.scissors
2.paper-size will depend on the size of your scrapbook.
3.scrapbook-there are many styles to choose from. I
prefer a three-ring binder, but pick one that best
suites your personal needs.
4.glue/photo sticks-you can find two way glue in craft
stores, which is great for scrapbooking.
5.magazines
6.photos
7.stickers
8.photo safe pencil
9.markers
10.colored pencils
11.templates or ruler
12.rubber stamps/ink
13.a big imagination!!!

Some of these supplies are optional, or you may find others that you like better. These are the ones I have found the most helpful in my scrapbooks. Most of these supplies can be found in your local craft store in the scrapbook or memory book aisle. Your kids can come along and have fun picking out the perfect sticker.

Now, once you have your theme, pick one item to be the centerpiece of your page. For example, a large letter A. Place that on the page. Then, find pictures of items that begin with the letter A. Have your child look through magazines to find pictures for you, or find stickers that represent those things. If you have actual photos of these items, that's even better, especially if your child's name begins with that letter!

Surround your main item with the smaller items, and include other styles of the same letter. You can find different templates with writing styles, get some off of your computer, or try your hand at a little freestyle writing! And, of course, your child can write on there as well.

Once you are done, you will have a wonderful book to share with the whole family. Your toddler will love it, because of all the bright colors, and interesting pictures. It's also a great way for them to associate letters with words. And, if you have pictures of people they know, they will love it even more! Your older child will love it because they got to help make it! You can even have them give it to your toddler as a present, which will make it even more special. And, of course, it will be a great memory piece for the whole family!
