| mom4k's Full Review: OMNIMOUNT RC-1 Bookshelf Speaker Stands |
So, my husband's newest toy is a home theater system. As far as HIS toys go, it started out a modest purchase. I was pleased.
But alas, I did not know what I was getting myself into. I mean, it's just a few speakers that you hook up to your TV, right?
That noise? It's the laughter from the male audio crowd.
WIFE ALERT: Once he buys the system the buying never ends!

So, the latest purchase to go along with his home theater system:
OMNIMOUNT BOOKSHELF SPEAKER STANDS
My question was, why do we need speaker stands?
Well, my husband thinks that it all sounds better if the front two speakers are exactly 3 1/2 inches higher than his ears when seated.
That noise? Me rolling on the floor laughing. But for the price of these speaker stands, why not make him happy?
We went to the store together because he isn't too good at understanding the WAF (Wife Acceptance Factor) of furniture associated with boy's toys. I was impressed with these speaker stands for several reasons:
Adaptability:
They are adjustable. They can be placed from 31" to 45" off of the ground. So where ever they are set they are bound to be 3 1/2 inches higher than someone's ears.
They have three different interchangeable adapters and a clamping mechanism. That means they will work with bottom, back, and keyhole mounting; 45 degree mounting, and tab bracket mounting. The clamping mechanism is sort of a catch all for the larger speakers. That is the one we are using now, but we can still use these stands if (when) my dear husband changes his mind and his speakers.
Quality and Stability:
These speaker stands are built with powder coated steel. They are heavy and very sturdy. The base is an extruded three touch point design that doesn't move! Additionally, there are steel isolation spikes at each of the three points. These spikes have an adjustment nut for leveling and really hold on to our berber carpet. Warning: These spikes could do damage to wood floors!
WAF (Wife Acceptance Factor):
These speakers are not intrusive. Ours are gray steel with a black stand and brackets. They do not yell, "Look at me!" which is the way I like it. They have cable management, through the hollow posts. Even the great big monster cable was able to squeeze through, so the front of the room looks neat and tidy.
Ease of Assembly:
There are five easy steps to assemble these speakers. I did it while my husband was drilling holes and pulling cable for the other speakers.
So, all in all this was not a purchase that I was overly thrilled about. But I can certainly stand these stands, and recommend them to others.
One note of caution:
When using the clamping mechanism, there are four one-inch square velcro stickers, to help stabilize the speakers. They are pretty wimpy. My husband was crawling around before the speakers were hooked up and one fell off and hit him on the head. (ouch!)
I went to my craft room and got some large "industrial strength" velcro and put 3" X 4" squares in the center of each speaker and stand. It seemed to do the trick. Those speakers aren't going anywhere now.
