Feel Like Mounting your own Tires? Try Discount Tire Direct
by Bryan_Carey | Apr 11 '04
Buying new tires is a chore that most of us put off for as long as we can. With some consumers, the task of having to purchase new tires is so dreaded and so expensive they will postpone it to the very last moment, just before all the tread has worn off ...

First the good - good prices and a fabulous website; online ordering and appointment setting is a breeze. Staff was courteous and I was in-and-out in less than an hour.

Now the bad - watch the work carefully!

1st issue - My bald spare tire & wheel was on the SUV. I bought 4 new tires and paid to have a different old tire put on the spare wheel. I had to stop the guy as he was going to put the bald spare back under the SUV without switching tires. Had I not been watching, I would not have found out until I needed the spare.

2nd issue - After switching the tires on the spare, they were about to put the spare away when I noticed there were no balancing weights on the rim. "Excuse me, but did you balance that tire?" Nope.

3rd issue - I had custom steel value caps when I came in. They cut and tossed the old stems with my caps. Nowhere to be found later on, they replaced them with some cheesy steel caps. I wanted my old ones back but they could not be found (when the cut the old valves out, they just let them fly).

4th issue - I paid the bill and walked out to my car. Before driving off, I walked around the vehicle to eyeball each tire and kick the hub cap to make sure they were all on tight. Good thing I did! One of them came right off.

So my recommendation is to buy your tires here ONLY if you are willing to stand outside the bay and watch the work being done - not something everyone is willing to do. If you're not willing or able, then spend a few extra few dollars and go to someone you trust.

Long time no see! Glad you're still reviewing. I guess it's because I've been reviewing more computer-related products than automotive (like I did about 2 years ago).

I was taking a stroll back "epinion" memory lanes, and realized I haven't seen you rating my current reviews. I decided to check your's out, and found out you are moving towards books.

Now, I'm not a heathen by any means... I just rarely read books. PC reviews on the net, as well as magazines, maybe. :) I guess I have a one-track mind now.

Good luck to you, and hope our paths will cross in the future.

Great Review!
We have an internal 'chat' non-work related mail distribution list at work where employees can ask for recommendations on various things. One was Tires Direct. Everyone had good things to say about the service.

Some people did say that they used the service as a bargaining point for buying the tires locally.
