If you perform for an audience are simply want to mix in your bedroom then you are going to need a mixer for your sound. The only way to properly coordinate multiple audio sources on-the-fly and mix like the pro's is by using a good mixer. Technic is a company that makes various sound equipment including mixers, turntables and headphones. Technics SH-DX1200K has been labeled the Official World DJ Championship Mixer. This is going to appeal to serious DJ's looking for a quality mixer who intend to play their turntable or CD player simultaneously.
Official World DJ Championship Mixer
The Technics SH-DX1200K is a 2-channel mixer with two main inputs that are switchable between line-level and phono inputs. This is more than enough to handle most live productions. The mixer has comfortable volume sliders, instead of those tiny knobs that some cheaper mixers use. The sliders move smoothly, without being too loose. The knobs all feel secure. In fact, the whole construction of Technics SH-DX1200K feels solid, from the flat surface panel design to the unit weighing in at 7 lbs. 11 oz. You can either install and this into your DJ system or leave it as a separate due to its sturdy design. The flat surface panel design and ergonomic construction of this mixer is nice. I digress, some of the other no-name mixer's I owned as a novice felt like I had to treat it with kid gloves to keep the knobs from falling off.
With Technics SH-DX1200K, youll feel like you have a mixer that can go into the battlefield and not fall apart. This mixer is clearly made for the real world where you sometimes drop your equipment or someone spills their drink. The durable construction and solid paint job make this an excellent tool for indoor and outdoor production location or home use. Take into consideration that this is an AC-powered mixer; so dont get any ideas about taking it into the field and using batteries. If you want to use it far from a power outlet, youll need to pack some extension cords.
It's all about the DJ
The mono inputs on Technics SH-DX1200K are balanced plugs with low crosstalk between channels. This allows use your microphone with a long cable that wont hum like cheaper unbalanced counterparts. Ive used Technics SH-DX1200K with my microphone, CD player and Technics SL-1200MK2 Turntable. The mixer manipulated my sound well when using the hamster switch. I was able to smoothly face the sound of the different sources in and out and monitor each channel individually with my headphones. The fader section VCA (Voltage-Controlled Amplifier) performs well providing a flawless performance. The tone control (-24dB/+12dB) and trim controls provide maximum functioning and audibility. The output sounds fantastic.
This mixer is capable enough of handle most DJ audio chores. It is important to remember your ability to fade and mix depends upon your mixing skills and expertise, as a DJ so dont blame the equipment if you can't wikki wikki. The only minor issue with this mixer is the fact that it uses 1/4" inputs for the mic instead of the more advanced XLR, but this is miniscule when looking at its overall ability.
Results:
Technics SH-DX1200K might be a little more mixer than a novice needs. However, the unit is great for bedroom DJ's who enjoy practicing their craft. The unit also features a clearly visible 3-column level meter, which I don't use, however I do like the glittery miniature light show I get when I mix. I prefer monitoring my equipment and mix the old fashion way by using headphone and the master/cue balance control and A/B switch. Fortunately, every lever and knob is clearly marked and visible. Bottom line, if you plan to mix audio on the fly, in the field or in the comfy surroundings of our bedroom, a tool like this is exactly what you need.
Overall, this mixer has many nice features, and the price is reasonable. This is an excellent mid level piece of DJ gear, I would recommend it to house, drum n' bass and dancehall DJ's who like performance. If you are looking for a series mid-level mixer, then look no further; you'll be please with the results you get from Technics SH-DX1200K.
