Radar detectors and Headphones
Apr 27 '01
The Bottom Line together this radar detector and headphones can't be beat.
I sometimes drive fast on my motorcycle (doesn't everyone?) I went looking for a radar detector that had large multi-colored display (for night time),headphone jack (it gets noisy without a windshield), voice and sound with volume control (voice works better with headphones) and reasonable price. (See my review in Auto/car electronics on the Cobra-9200 for my ratings and the others) you can read the display at night just using your periferal sight. using headphones with $1.99 adapter (See Below) you can adjust the volume to the noise level around you, with or without helmet (I live in ohio). The manual says it can pickup lazer 1 1/2 miles away (straight line) which at 60-MPH gives you 1 1/2 min. to slow down...even going 80+ will give you 60+ seconds to slow down.
I live in ohio (no helmet required). Whether I wear a helmet or not the wind noise at my ears is loud. I was looking for headphones to wear that would stay in my ears with wind pulling on the cords and would have sound over the wind noise. (See my review in Audio/headphones for my ratings on the KOSS "the plug") I tried regular headphones that have a band across your head (hard to get into helmet without pinching your head), Ear buds (will not stay in when the wind tugs on the cord), even actual speakers mounted in my helmet..lol (added weight to my head). ALL those were cheaper than buying THE PLUG. but the plug is what works the best. the cones can be compressed before inserting into your ear and then they expand to make a custom fit that will withstand 80+MPH without a helmet (still haven't fallen out) and more than loud enough over the wind noise. now even riders on pocket rockets can listen to their walkman or CD player. I'll be checking mine out with a C.B. next... for long distance travel
