At the end of last year, when we booked our flight to England, Len checked out on-line stores for a hire car. The first one was a private company. They offered us a Ford Focus, or similar vehicle for around $690. After going through the whole process, they billed us for over $1,200. Our credit card company has been fighting this company for 6 months. They finally wrote it off and credited us with the full amount.
So after this experience we decided to check out well known companies. We ended up going into the Avis web-site at www.avis.com.
Up came a very easy to read and get around site.
On the left, Make a reservation. Underneath it. Pick up date and time. Return date and time.
Rental location information. City. Town. State. Country.
It was so simple to enter the details. I changed the location to United Kingdom. From the U.K. I then had various options. I put in Airports. Then went into London, which brought up both Gatwick and Heathrow. After clicking on Gatwick, I went into the list of vehicles. As there were only the 2 of us, and my Dad in England, we decided on a compact, with 5 doors. Also went for the automatic. There is no way either of us could now drive a stick shift in the heavy traffic, in England.
We actually chose the Ford Focus 1.6 or a similar vehicle.
Then came up another page with insurance options. We just took the one that came with the car, as the credit card picks up any excess. Also child seats, etc were available.
The total cost was very similar to the other company, so we went ahead and booked.
Within minutes we got an automated e-mail thanking us for the reservation. With the reservation number and all the details.
Then the next e-mail was the reservation confirmation. Again giving the same details, but also letting us know what we would need in England. We were really impressed with Avis.com.
On the main page were other headings to click on. Deals. Renter's guide. About Avis. My Avis. Customer service. I didn't go in any of these because the site was so easy to use.
They even sent us an e-mail reminding us of the transaction, the day we were leaving for England. That is what I call service.
My next review will be on Avis Rental/Hire cars. Boy, do I have a story to tell.

You may wish to read my review on Avis. to find out how good their service was. We were happy enough to get a similar car, not the Ford, but a Renault Megane. It ran well, but we did hit a few problems with the employees, not really caring. Everything that was quoted by Avis.com we received.
