| Staceys1's Full Review: Daisy Tunic |
As my daughter's Pre-K year came to an end last year, she was excited to know that in the fall not only would she be starting Kindergarten, but also Daisy Girl Scouts, with some of her friends from her class. After paying the fee, we were told that the only "uniform" necessary was this "Daisy Tunic" so off to the specified store we went.
I originally called this article of clothing a smock, and as my then four-year old daughter was apparently not familiar with that word, she called it a "mock" for months. I later learned that it was officially called a tunic, but now she still refers to it as a smock.
Our Daisy Tunic cost $12 at our local Girl Scout supplier, which appears to be the going rate at other stores as well. When you first get it, it looks quite bland, though it is a bright blue color. There is a large opening for the head to fit through and it hangs down over the shoulders in both the front and back, approximately to just below the waist. There are two pockets in the front, and near the bottom, on the right hand side in all capitals are the words "Daisy Girl Scouts".
The sides have matching blue ties, which is the only problem with this tunic. First of all, most Kindergartners are only just learning to tie things for themselves (my daughter still hasn't quite mastered it as we approach first grade) and for them to attempt to tie something on their side is very awkward. Yes, there were parents, teachers, and Girl Scout leaders to assist, but for some reason, even with double knots, they untied fairly easily. A velcro or snap closure might be a better idea for this tunic intended for little girls.
This Daisy Tunic serves its purpose as identifying girls as a Daisy Girl Scout, as well as protecting the clothing underneath from arts and crafts and spilled snacks. It is made of 65% polyester and 35% cotton and the paint, juice and who knows what else, splatters on it have come out in the washing machine. After a number of washings, it does not seem to have faded or shrunk at all.
This smock is available in two sizes: 6/7 or 8/10. My daughter was wearing a size 6 at the time I purchased this and the smaller size fit her fine. Though she usually wore her coordinating Daisy pants and shirt to school in preparation for her Daisy meeting right after school, she brought the tunic along in her backpack and was able to put it on herself, but needed help in tying the strings.
If your daughter is entering a Daisy Girl Scout group, then this Daisy Tunic is the one article of the uniform that she needs. Throughout the year she will earn patches for participating in various events and for learning new skills and those patches should be adhered to this tunic so she can proudly display them. Of course, to complete the outfit, you can purchase leggings, a long sleeve shirt, socks and a headband all with coordinating Daisy Girl Scout logos on them.
