I've been looking for the kind of service that Smugmug delivers for a looong time, and I 'm glad I finally found it:
-unlimited picture upload! file size up to 8 megs!
That's what convinced me in the first place. I wanted to be able to put high res versions of my pictures online so that people can save them and get decent prints out of them. You can order the prints there by the way...
Another application of that is to empty your compact flash card when on the road and store your pictures remotely...
-picture upload made easy and powerful: you don't have to install a third party software, just drag and drop the files! Or the whole folder! Follow the progress of the upload! This was not asking for much, but Smugmug is the only picture sharing website that offers that service that I know of...
-good looking interface, even the default one
I found that the default interface provided for the users of the basic service looks great. That's a matter of opinion though...
I like the idea that I will be able to do it my way later, by upgrading to the more advanced services.
In summary, I'd say that Smugmug offers a great service to medium to advanced photographers, willing to build an online gallery without going through the trouble of building a website for scratch.
But it will satisfy the basic user as well, with the ability to upload an unlimited amount of high res pictures so that the family can easily order high quality reprints.
