| amyk49's Full Review: Mr. Clean Magic Eraser Duo |
I've been on a cleaning rampage lately - gotta go with the flow when the mood strikes, because it doesn't happen often enough. I've found the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser Duo quite useful in my cleaning efforts.
~ Product Description
The Mr. Clean Magic Eraser Duo looks like a two-sided sponge. It's about 5" x 2 1/2" in size. One side is white, which is composed of an "innovative cleaning material that penetrates surface grooves to easily and thoroughly break up tough dirt and grime." The other side is blue, and is an absorbent layer that allows you to wipe up spills, and also gives a little extra layer to hold onto as the white side is used up.
~ How Does This Work?
To use, just wet with water and squeeze out the excess. Then you're ready to begin cleaning. Just gently rub the white side of the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser Duo on whatever surface you want to clean. You can flip it over to the blue side whenever necessary while you're cleaning to wipe off excess dirt or moisture. No cleaning solutions needed!
What all will this clean? According to the packaging it's suitable for cleaning scuff marks and dirt from walls, floors, and doors. Good for dirt on refrigerators and appliances. Breaks up bathroom soap scum. Try it on patio furniture, crayon marks on walls, athletic shoe soles, leather uppers, car interiors.
There is a caution to test first in an inconspicuous area with light pressure to see if the surface will scratch or become dull. This is not recommended for use on surfaces that are polished, glossy, or on brushed, satin, dark, or faux finishes. If you use this on dishes, be sure to rinse thoroughly before use. And don't use the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser with chlorine bleach.
~ My Experience
I was fortunate to receive the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser Duo free, with the understanding that I would provide an honest review of my thoughts and feelings of this product. And what great timing - since I'm on a cleaning binge!
At first glance it looks like a sponge. After wetting it prior to use and squeezing out the excess water, the white side barely felt wet at all. Your hands don't get wet, so it's not at all messy. Not as messy as an ordinary sponge. There is no scent or smell that I can detect.
I began with my white, textured surface refrigerator. The Mr. Clean Magic Eraser Duo easily and effortlessly cleaned off dirt and food smears, and all that other gunk that accumulates on a fridge. It was truly amazing! I didn't even need to use a lot of pressure. Just wipe, and the dirt was gone! I then used it on the switch plates, and painted walls around my kitchen counters. Dirt gone again! Whenever I noticed smeared dirt, I'd just turn it over and wipe with the blue spongy side, which worked great.
I carefully tried it on a brush stainless steel trash can, but it made it look smeared. Can't use this on anything that is glossy, because it will make it dull.
I could see the material on the white side of the Eraser starting erode, but not a whole lot. It didn't look new anymore though.
Okay, this works great on fridges and painted surfaces. I wanted to try it on something tougher. I had been intending to clean the stone hearth around our propane gas stove. So off I went to see how the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser Duo would do on that rough surface. There were a few spots of something or other on the stones, and with a few wipes and a little scrubbing, off came the spots. I basically just lightly wiped off the rest of the hearth - it's a very small hearth - and it looked really great. Although the Mr. Clean Eraser doesn't snag on rough surfaces, it did take a beating. It had definitely eroded even more. And the white side was now quite dirty. I rinsed it out, and amazingly all the dirt washed away from the white side, and it looked clean again. Although the white side was all bumpy and dented now.
Now, what else can I clean? Oh yeah - I'd been wanting to clean the entryway door, inside and outside. This door has a textured, wood-like appearance. I think it's like a fiberglass material actually, that looks like wood. It's' not painted. It was a mess, particularly on the exterior side. My Mr. Clean Magic Eraser Duo did an amazing job on this door! It really did erase the dirt, with just a little rubbing and pressure. Somehow it gets into the small grooves and textured surfaces and does seem to just erase the dirt. I had to rinse out the Mr. Clean Erase a few times while cleaning the door, but the dirt rinses out extremely well. Also using the blue side to wipe away occasional smears when the white side gets dirty is helpful.
The only problem was my Mr. Clean Magic Eraser Duo was all gone by the time I'd finished the door. The white side was totally eroded, and all I had left was the thin blue part. I was a little disappointed because I would have loved to try this on other surfaces and other cleaning jobs. Thankfully it lasted long enough to finish the entry door.
~ Final Thoughts
If you've tried the basic Mr. Clean Magic Eraser, the only difference with this Mr. Clean Magic Eraser Duo is that there is a blue spongy side added that is useful for wiping up moisture or smears, and also gives a little backing to hold onto as the white side is used up.
This is fantastic for refrigerators, painted surfaces and doors. Just rub, and the dirt is "erased." But you can't use this on glossy or even satin-type finishes, as it will leave it looking smeary. I have a lot of glossy/satin finishes in my home, so that limits where the Mr. Clean Eraser can be used. Also, it just didn't last very long. But my next trip to the store will include another Mr. Clean Magic Eraser Duo, because I want to have it on hand for those jobs it excels at.
