| Freak369's Full Review: Rite Aid Aluminum Foil |
If Ive said it once, Ill say it a thousand times there are some products that I wont compromise on or skimp on; aluminum foil isnt one of them. In the midst of a baking crisis a few months ago I found myself without aluminum foil oh sure there were three inches of product left in the carton but what the hell can you do with three inches outside of wrapping a half of a sandwich? Knowing that my local Smart & Final was closed and the grocery stores were ready to shut down as well I busted a move to Rite Aid to see if they had anything that I could use as a substitute. Fate must have been with me because as soon as I entered the pantry section of the store the young and oblivious clerk was stocking the shelf with twenty or so boxes of Rite Aid Aluminum Foil. Yes! My cookies wouldnt have to sit out overnight and get dried out and Id be able to assemble the care packages for my brood who were overseas at the time.
At first I was a little leery about buying the Rite Aid Aluminum Foil, my biggest concern being it splitting when ripping it off the roll. Call it a pet peeve or just me being anal retentive but I cant stand it when the foil rips or wrinkles. I tossed two rolls in my the little blue mini cart and made my merry way to the school supply section to see what other goodies awaited me. It wasnt until I went through the first roll that I realized that the Rite Aid Aluminum Foil is the same exact thing as the name brand one I had been using for years and about a dollar cheaper. I love my Reynoldss Aluminum Foil and the industrial rolls that I buy at Smart & Final but you know, if I can save a dollar a roll then hey, thats what I am going to do. Its the same product, has both a shiny side and a dull side, comes off the roll nicely and protects food the same exact way.
Rite Aid Aluminum Foil
Call it a modern day wonder or an indispensable kitchen tool but there doesnt seem to be a single day that I dont reach in my drawer and grab out my aluminum foil. Be it to wrap up leftovers, cover a bowl or for one of the kids experiments this stuff is out so often I wonder why I even bother putting it back in the drawer. Since Ive switched to the Rite Aid version Ive had no troubles at all, not that I had any with the name brand assortment but Im pretty happy to say that the conversion process went off without a hitch. The Rite Aid version is the same as the standard version of Reynoldss 75 square feet [25 yards x 12 inches], metal cutting bar attached to the bottom side of the carton, quick stick tabs to keep the box closed .. all that and about a dollar cheaper than what I was used to paying for the same size when purchasing the name brand varieties. My biggest concerns were how it ripped off the roll and if it would split or rip when wrapping things. After using this for about two months I can say that this is the same identical product as the name brand ones Ive used in the past.
So far Ive used this for sealing up fish prior to putting it in the oven, lining plates, wrapping up enchiladas, covering up leftovers and as an overpacking for steaks and chicken breasts that were marinated and frozen [helps to keep freezer burn to a minimum. With the exception of one time I had none of the parcels split or rip and when it did happen, it was my fault for trying to wrap too much food at one time. At the suggestion of one of my neighbors I started using this to line the glass Pyrex baking dish I make stuff in; not only does it make clean up a lot easier but it also helps to crisp up the bottom section yeah no more bottom soggy stuffing!
Alternative Uses
Since I started to stock up on the Rite Aid Aluminum Foil Ive found some great alternative uses for it around the house. I started to line the inside of my hanging potted plants with it so that the excess water wouldnt leak all over the place but out of one specific hole this means I dont get drenched when I water them and I can have the drainage hole facing away from me. Another great use was inside the fruit and crisper bins in the refrigerator. I was forever yanking them out and having to clean them, now I just pull fold up the piece while it is still in the drawer and all the dirt, leafy greens and other assorted drawer gunk stays inside it and can be easily tossed in the garbage. Another great use for this is to line the inside of candle holders with it, this way when the votive or other sized candle is spent all you have to do is turn the holder over and the residue falls right out. No more having to dig it out with a knife or tying to wedge another candle on top of the old wax.
The Bottom Line
So far Ive had no trouble using the Rite Aid Aluminum Foil; it performs and seals food just as well as the name brands and costs less. The only real draw back is that some of the smaller Rite Aid stores dont have a huge pantry section and dont carry this. It is available online but you know, I cant justify making a purchase at Drugstore.com for just this item or adding it to an order when I know that I can drive a few miles out of my way to find it locally. I wish they would make a larger sized roll because I do go through the 25 square foot one pretty quickly and while Im suggesting things it wouldnt hurt to have a size thats longer than twelve inches because covering a turkey with this size is a real challenge. Even so, I cant complain about this product in the least it saves me money, works just as well as the others on the market and keeps my food from getting dried out.
As always, thanks for the read!
