With the impending birth of our first child, we started feeling uneasy about the safety/size of our current vehicle.
After much research and test driving of 2004 SUV models, including the Toyota Highlander, Volkswagen Toureg and Honda Pilot, we chose the Acura MDX. The safety features, such as Stability Assistance and "smart" side curtain airbags were exactly what we were looking for.
We brought our car seat to the dealership to see how much room would be left in the second row once it was properly installed and found that there is comfortable room for a passenger on either side. Perfect. The 3rd row seat is fairly useless when you have a car seat installed, as you cannot fold the 2nd row seats forward for access. We don't use it anyway - it stays folded down full time. I wish it folded completely flat.
The interior styling is very nice. We added the all-season floor mats for a sportier interior look & to save the carpet. Seats are very comfortable in front & second row. 3rd row seats are harder. Good headroom in front & 2nd row for average size people (5'7 & 6'). Easy to read display/gauges that are easy to use and reach. Good to have the stereo controls on the steering wheel. We like that you can either control the heating/cooling of the 2nd row from the front seats, or let the passengers in the 2nd row have control themselves. Exterior styling seemed a bit bland, so we had the nosemask installed & it made the whole vehicle look better.
The power is great, lots of get up & go. I fell confident pulling out into fast moving traffic & passing on the highway. The transmission shifts smoothly in low & high gears. The brakes feel solid, I can stop quickly with confidence if necessary. Handling is sportier than other SUVs we test drove - it seems to hug the curves. I don't feel compelled to slow down for tighter turns.
I have been driving the car now for 4 months and have had no issues. It is extremely comfortable, handles like a car and gets decent gas mileage for an SUV (18 MPG city, 22 highway).
