| sasybamagrl's Full Review: Whirlpool Calypso GVW9959K Top Load Washer |
My washing machine of 8 years finally bit the dust in 2001. Off to the Sears store I go to purchase another machine and was talked into buying the "Kenmore Elite Calypso" I was told by the Sears rep. that the Calypso was the best machine on the market and it was rated the best buy and performance by consumers. "SOLD" I thought that was wonderful. I loved the sound of it and was sold on the fact that it was H2O conservative & energy efficient, no agitator to deal with. My dream had came true, the perfect and wonderful washing machine. I paid $1200.00 for this machine with an extended warranty Thankfully. My friends and family laughed at me for paying this much money for a washer. I thought I had made a very smart decision. The first year went fairly well... but I had noticed some streaky grayish/brown areas on some of my clothes. The thought never crossed my mind that it could be this "wonderful washing machine" of mine. NEVER! I blamed it on the family for getting stains on our clothes and not noticing it beforehand so they could be pre-treated.
Well, I had my first service call on the washer shortly after my first year had passed. Boy that was costly. Good thing it was under warranty. The motor, pump, and U joint & seals had to be replaced along with a hose or two. The repair went fairly smooth except for the fact that I found out that Sears techs did not carry parts for this machine and they all had to be ordered. Make a long story short... I spent an entire month hauling clothes to & from the laundry mat. (Did I mention I was pregnant?)
3 months later...Here we go again... the same thing happens again and sears once again has to order parts for my "wonderful machine". Once again, now even more pregnant, I spend another month at the laundry mat. At this point I began to feel like something was not so great about my "wonderful machine". The Repair man comes to put on my parts this time and in the conversation he states that this machine has the most flawed design of any machine on the market. (OMG) "NOT MY WONDERFUL MACHINE"
A few months go by and I begin to notice this awful odor lurking around the laundry room. I invest in "Glade sprays, plug ins" I was still in denial about my "wonderful machine". Each day that passes the smell gets worse. Then it gets to the point where it is smelling up the entire house. within 3 months the odor was so bad that company was noticing. (this was embarrassing) So, We take off the top and front of the machine (MOLD) I have never seen so much mold & mildew. I was absolutely sick at my stomach. We were devastated. I get my husband to help me and we go inside "my wonderful machine" as far as we can get and we clean it out with clorox and vinegar. I had a reality check and was no longer in denial about my "wonderful machine", I became ashamed. To add insult to injury now my family and friends were laughing about me having to take my washer apart and clean inside of it.
Moving right along now 4 months have passed and the washer goes completely out again. The Sears Tech knows me by heart now. We are on first name basis and he no longer calls for directions to my home. This time the entire machine has to be re-built and the same parts replaced again. (motor, pump, U joint, seals, hoses, etc..) 2 1/2 months later I finally get all the parts in and call Sears to come do their thing. Thank God for that extended warranty, huh!
Exactly 4 month later here we go again with this terrible smell. My clothes were stinking, the house was stinking. I didn't bother cleaning it out this time, I just called Sears instead. That was a joke. The man came out looked in the machine, turned it on to make sure it was working and basically told me he couldn't smell anything and made me feel stupid. Shipped me some "Glisten" and told me to continue running HOT water and Clorox through the machine and it should finally clear up. (WRONG) I doubled my water bill and the smell is still there!
I have called Sears customer service, talked to the managers at the store where I purchased the machine... They deny that my machine is a lemon. In order for my washer to qualify under their so called "Lemon Guarantee" It has to have the same parts go out and ordered 4 times in a 12 month period. I missed that by only a few months and they are denying me any refunds or exchanges. I have begged for just a plain inexpensive dependable washer. NOPE!
Now once again it has been another 4 months and my Calypso is down again. But I got smart after the last time and invested in a back up washer. Guess which one I am using now? THE BACKUP! My washer is awaiting its 3rd pump and a hose right now.
My circuit board is the only thing that hasn't gone bad yet, but hey there is still time. If I had of known this machine was such a hunk of junk, I would have fixed and kept my old one.
In the 3 1/2 years I had this machine I have spend 6 months at a laundry mat paying to wash my clothes. I have had to throw away hundreds of dollars of stained and ruined clothes. I reviewed my previous repair bills and noticed that the cost of these repairs each time ranged anywhere from $300.00 to $700.00. Well it is safe to say that 3 pumps, 2 motors, 3 U Joints, and many hoses later I am over my "wonderful machine!" "THANK GOD FOR THAT EXTENDED WARRANTY"
I want to be a part of the class action law suit. This machine should be recalled, and removed from the market entirely until it can be perfected! The rep who sold me this machine needs to be fired for intentionally selling me a hunk of junk. (my service record is proof)
DON'T BE FOOLED BY ANYONE WHO SAYS THIS IS A GREAT MACHINE! After reading this, If there is anyone out there who is still thinking of buying this type of machine, email me... I have a "wonderful machine" just for you!
