| blautens's Full Review: Canon PIXMA MP780 Inkjet Multifunction Printer |
As an IT professional, I get to see scads of enterprise class printers. But consumer printers can sometimes disappoint me with their build quality, even if they print well. I purchased an HP 5510 last year for a family member, and while it works fairly well (other than the monstrous HP drivers), it always felt cheaply built. Not this Canon Pixma MP780. Not only are the photo prints stunning and flawless (and printed at breakneck speed), what truly impresses me is the fit, finish, and feel of this unit. The damped front cover, the solid lid, the quality construction and impressive appearance really surprised me. I thought in order to achieve the phenomenal print quality and speed that the other tangibles would have to suffer, but they didn't. Based on the truly impressive Canon Pixma IP-4000 printer, this all in one delivers quality photos, excellent text and graphics, versatile paper handling (two trays and duplexing), speed, quality scans, easy faxing, and fast copying. The distinctive ring feature works as advertised, with virtually no setup - it ignores my primary number and only answers my second number.
This printer lacks a couple of features that may or may not be important to you - no built in networking, media reader, or color LCD with simple photo editing (although it does support Pictbridge with its USB camera connection), but what it does offer it does EXTREMELY well.
Typically, Canon inkjets are thrifty with ink, and this one uses 5 cartridges, 3 color and 2 blacks, one dye based and one pigment based. The front panel display will let you know when you need more ink, and although I'm not equipped to objectively rate ink usage or cost, I can't imagine it'll be any different than any Canon inkjet. I've ripped through 75 4 x 6 photos and a bunch of miscellaneous printing and CD labels and I still show 1/3 left on the color tanks. Oddly, it came with one spare black cartridge. Replacement color tanks are around $10 from Amazon.
One very minor shortcoming for some - the documentation, although fairly complete, might confuse the the novice. Also, no USB cable is included (although sadly, I expect that these days).
A lot of printer for $249 (after a $50 rebate). I've used it for a month now and I'm extremely pleased. I can't imagine anyone being disappointed with the purchase of this printer.
