topjimmy5150's Full Review: 2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser
I have a 2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser base model in Cool Vanilla that I bought on Dec 31st, 2004. I really like the looks of the car, and it feels so much more solid than anything else I've driven. These are high quality cars!
Those who are experiencing less than satisfactory fuel economy need to evaluate their driving style, and check their tires to make sure they're properly inflated to at least 34psi. I get between 23 and 26 mpg on average with the automatic transmission. Although I am 34 years old, I can be accused of driving like an old man. I drive slowly and avoid jackrabbit starts. Why? Because I adore this car and want it to last as long as possible!
There is lots of room, and plenty of places to store stuff. There is plenty of leg room in the back seat. The area behind the back seats is deceptively large. It doesn't look like much until you go to use the cargo area and you find that it swallow up much more than you think. I can put my 60lbs Fender amplifier and guitar (in it's case) back there without folding the seats down! If you have to fold the seats down, the parcel tray can be set so it's level with the rear seats, so you have a long, flat cargo area, without removing the seats! The seats can be removed for even more space!
One thing that is great about this car is the number of enthusiasts groups out on the Internet. If you have a problem, chances are someone on one of the many forums has already had the same. I like this because that means I can know pretty much what is wrong with a car before I enter a dealership service department.
The Chrysler mechanicals worry me. In particular, that automatic transmission. I'm going to make sure to maintain the car by the book and hopefully I can avoid any tranny issues. I haven't heard that this is a big problem with PT's, but I know a lot of people with Chrysler 4 speed automatics that have been nightmares. I always turn off overdrive when I'm around town.
