| vemartin's Full Review: Hewlett Packard LaserJet 8100 Laser Printer |
Whirrrrrrr, like a jet engine (only far more quieter) the print engine deep inside the Hewlett Packard 8100 DN laser printer starts up. Click-clack, click-clack, click-clack, click-clack, click-clack, click-clack, click-clack, out the pages came one at a time less then a second apart: all perfect, all bright, all clear, all sharp & crisp, legible, and warm.
I am a big HP printer fan. I think HP builds the best printers on the planet and backs them with the best warranty program in the industry. Over the last ten years I have owned several different models of HP inkjet printers from the small 300 series to the large OfficeJet series, and to date have never been disappointed with the output or performance. I highly recommended them to family, friends, and clients. I believe HP printers offer unmatched price, performance, and quality at every price-point. The HP 8100 DN (Departmental Network) continues in that fine tradition.
The HP 8100 DN is a departmental network printer, which can print up to 32 pages per minute (ppm), is shipped with 24 MB of Ram, which reduces the waiting period for complex documents to print; for example Power Point presentations and Visio drawing require large amounts of memory to process and print. The HP 8100 DN is equipped with a 166Mhz RISC processor, designed to reduce waiting time for page output, and has a resolution of 1200 x 1200 Dots Per Inch (dpi), with HP FastRes printer language technology.
The printer communicates with the departmental or corporate network via a built-in HP JetDirect 10/100Base-TX Ethernet card, but can also utilize a bi-directional parallel port, Fast IR Port, and is equipped with two additional EIO slots for the insertion of additional NIC’s. In addition to Ethernet, the HP 8100 DN also supports Token Ring, and Apple Local Talk network connections, as well as serial and USB connections.
The HP 8100 DN is shipped standard with three paper trays, two of which hold 500 sheets each and one fold down which is designed for legal sized paper, envelopes, and A4 paper. The printer can handle paper stock 16 to 53 lb; 16 to 28 lb for 2 sided (duplex) printing.
Our trusty HP 8100 DN see a lot of duty cycle because it must support a department of at least 100 people who print to it constantly. In the last six months the only down time it has seen has been due to low toner; the printer just works! As of this writing the HP 8100 series of printer has discontinued and replaced them with the newer HP 8150 series; the HP 8100 DN has been superceded by the HP 8150 DN, which ships with a more powerful processor (a RISC 250Mhz), new software drivers, and 8 more MB of memory standard.
