| MerlinSteele's Full Review: Gran Turismo 1 for PlayStation 1 |
The first time I saw this game was actually on a demo disc for the Playstation. I was pretty surprised at the graphics of the game, especially the replay. I bought the game not long after, and I raced with it for quite a while. I remember one time my Mom and Dad had dropped by, and here's me, a 30 something guy showing his Mom and Dad his new toy! I just couldn't believe the graphics.
I'm the type of person who bores easily with something unless it is something that rewards and challenges me constantly, so after a few months of this game, I was looking for something else. Maybe if I'd had one of those steering wheel accesories for the game, I might have gotten a lot more out of it. As it was, I was just using the gamepad for it, and even though I got pretty good with it(I was beating my friends constantly), it was still too much of a challenge at times, to the point of irritability. The AI cars just rolled around the track while I'd curse and try to get my car under control.
The hardest part for me was the time trials, the part in the Gran Turismo (not the arcade part), where you have to qualify to race certain types of races. Man, I had to try some of those over and over before I got them. There WAS a kind of satisfaction when I finally accomplished such a daunting task, but it seemed like it was so much trouble!
While I love to race (I drive a quick Ford, yes there is one), I'm not as hardcore as some people are, apparently.
Before I forget, there is one part of the 'game' part, where you can buy and sell and modify your cars, after you win races and make money. This is the main 'plot' of the game, seems like, and it's kind of interesting in an economical sort of way. You can move a car's horsepower up by doing something to the engine or turbo, and then rush right out to the racetrack to see if you can see a difference in your race.
Actually, during the time I was caught up in the game, it was pretty fun. It's just been a long time since I've played it, and since then have discovered 'Driver', a fun game where just cruising around town can be a blast. For some reason since the pc game 'Magic Carpet', I've had a great interest in 360 degree free movement games, where the area of play is not very limited.
Gran Turismo will always be held in high esteem by me, considered as one of the greats, mainly because if it's impeccable graphics.
