Dish Network's PVR vs. TiVo
by Beachbummin | Sep 05 '01
Don't let Dish Network tell you "it's exactly like TiVo", because it isn't.

DirectTV with Tivo vs. Dishnet high end PVR 721 (Reply to this comment)

We have been loyal fans of dishnet for years. We even bought (out of our own pocket) the best of the best recievers. It had 90 hours of record time. We hardly ever had that maxed out.

Here are the pro-s of the Dishnet 721 receiver.
*picture in picture (you can watch one show with the flip flop channel in the little window screen.
*guides- There are 4 favorites list to choose from, this is great for my family of 4. I was able to set up my daughters PG list just for her. One for my husband, one for myself, and one was for our babysitter. This sure beats having to scroll through the ONE favorites list on TIVO. ONE !!! The person who programed that must have been childless !
*Menu\guide- was preloaded everytime it was pressed you saw what was on, and you could scroll for 2 weeks without missing a beat. On TIVO, you have to wait for the "guide" to download,.... Now say for instance you wanted to see what was on Thursday at this same time. On the TIVO function you have to go to a different menu and change the date to read for that thrusday, punch that in, scroll back up to press enter, and enter again. Or you can do it the slow way and click the right arrow about 70 times to get to Thursday
(reloading the guide\menu each time).
*30 sec advace forward on the DISH 721...Just press it 3 times and you are back to the programming. In order to get DIRECT TV to have that, you must re-programming your buttons but reseaching a "hack" on the internet.
* As you are looking at your guide on the 721, the last show you were watching was in the upper right hand corner. This was a great little addition so he could continue to watch his show while I was searching for a different channel. Tivo's guide takes up the whole screen...better get in and out of the guide quick or you'll miss the whole show !

Like others I'm in the market and just spoke with Dish customer service today. They did say that their PVR was just like Tivo yet cheaper. After this review I'm now heading to Tivo. Buying their PVR/Receiver (or DirectTV's Tivo/Receiver) kind of blocks you into their service doesn't it? If you buy the box as a separate unit you always have the choice of getting your TV entertainment from any provider.

You wrote: "I'll sell the PVR cheap because it's a P.O.S.!"

I am interested to buy it.

Sorry I didn't answer this for so long. You can buy TiVo and use it with any Satellite or Cable system. I have both TiVo and a PVR with my Dish Network. I'll sell the PVR cheap because it's a P.O.S.!
