| den_inte_dod's Full Review: Trashed, Lost & Strung Out [ECD] [EP] - Children O... |
The heavy metal scene has indeed altered over the years, bringing in all of the new bands who carry the torch from the pioneers of the ones who started it. Children of Bodom are perhaps one of these bands, and when I found out about them, I was simply astonished. It happened to be that the single "Trashed, Lost & Strungout" was the song that introduced me to this Finnish metal band. I decided to pick up the EP which included that single, which I soon learned included enhanced features that you could reveal as you put the disc into your computer. I thought it would've been worth my cash, so I picked it up, eager to listen to it as I got home.
The EP starts off with a song that Children of Bodom decided to put on their 2005 release, Are You Dead Yet?. "Trashed, Lost & Strungout" is the song that I speak of. It makes a wonderful introduction to the EP, for it has booming bass from Henkka, fiery riffs from vocalist/guitarist Alexi, and thunderous drumming done by Jaska. Alexi performs a magnificent solo toward the end of the song, just before the song closes up with one last repetition of the catchy chorus.
"Knuckleduster", similar to many other Children of Bodom songs, begins with Alexi doing his signature scream - more specifically, "YEEEAOOOWW!!". I must note the excellent use of keyboards in the song by Janne. I've always thought that the keyboards are a very good addition to the flawless music that Children of Bodom creates. The guitar riffs are very chuggy yet still rapid. Jaska uses the double bass well during Alexi's amazing guitar solo that is sure to stun you. I am surprised that C.O.B. didn't put this one on their latest album, for it sounds sort of in the same tone as the rest of the songs featured on it.
"Bed of Nails" begins with a somewhat eerie intro in which you soon hear Jaska lightly hitting the snare on the drums. You will feel as if you should sing along to this song, even if you do not know the lyrics. Alexi does piercing screams at some points of the song, that will bewilder you on how this guy can pull off such powerful roars. Nearing the end of the song, things speed up and Alexi's vocals may become slightly unclear. However, you will still want to bang your head to all of the commotion going on.
"She is Beautiful" starts with a looped riff that doesn't really sound like it'd be in a Children of Bodom song - more like some punk rock band. Some will laugh at the lyrics, for they can appear funny at times that you can catch what Alexi says. Apparently, he is speaking about a girl that he thinks is attractive. What also may make some people laugh is when you can hear back up vocals that go "Na, na, na, na...". Putting together all of the inferences that I have made of this song, I'm thinking that the guys made this one for fun. It doesn't really include the elements of an average Children of Bodom song.
This EP includes the songs that I have spoken of and footage that can be viewed on your computer that is entitled "Trashed & Lost in Helsinki", as well as the video for "Trashed, Lost & Strungout" itself. I'd say it's worth the price that I had payed for it, which was $7.99. The footage shows the guys traveling around Helsinki, Finland, and even visiting Lake Bodom, which they had gotten their name from. The "Trashed & Lost in Helsinki" segment is full of humor and even Tuomas from Nightwish makes his appearance in the footage. If you are looking for a cheap disc that you can purchase that features rare Children of Bodom tracks, footage of the guys, and the video for TL&S, buy this whenever possible.
