New private investigator Abby Rose thinks she has found her niche: adoption investigation. Her first client is Megan Beadford, a well-to-do young woman who wants to find her birth mother before she walks down the aisle. Abby doesn't have much luck finding Megan's mother, but she is still invited to attend the nuptials. Everything goes as planned, until Abby spots a woman at the ceremony who no one seems to recognize. Before she can approach the woman, all hell breaks loose. Megan's father is found dead at the reception--and Abby knows that the mysterious woman may have something to do with it.
A Wedding to Die For Leann Sweeney's second mystery featuring Abby Rose, is a cute book with a likable main character and enough twists and turns to keep you guessing until the end. Though I have not read Sweeney's first book, Pick Your Poison it was easy to get into the groove of Abby's personality and investigative style. With the help of her psychologist sister, Kate, Abby begins looking more into the mysterious woman who just may be Megan's long lost mother. Her journey will take her as far away as Jamaica and as close as her own back yard--where she just happens to meet up with an ex girlfriend of her cop boyfriend.
Sweeney's writing style is amusing and quick-moving, with one quirk that really put me off. She has a tendency to use a lot of annoying, cliched similes that made me roll my eyes or groan. Here are a couple examples: The wind off the bay was cold enough to make a lawyer put his hands in his own pockets; Uncle Graham was so drunk he'd probably grab a snake and try to kill a stick and I swear if we were cremated together, the guy wouldn't warm up. These phrases are peppered throughout the book and were always distracting. I'm sure Sweeney was trying to be cute and unique, but it came off as tired and not a little stupid.
Other than that one drawback, A Wedding to Die For is a welcome addition to the chick-lit mystery genre. It's amusing, has a good main character and featured a solid mystery. Recommended to anyone who enjoys this genre or even those who like straight mysteries.
