Oct 11 '01 (Updated May 22 '02)

The Bottom Line Purchase the highest quality mattress set you can afford at a reputable mattress shop.

You know you need a new mattress set when….

1. The cover is stained with coffee spills, an occasional foot print and anything else that everyday life throws on your mattress that stains.

2. There is a permanent imprint of your body, with a little more sag in the middle, this depresses you and you feel like going on diet in vain hope the mattress will pop back up and look new again.

3. You are in the middle of changing bed sheets and someone knocks at the door. Dear God! It's your mother-in-law! Do you race to the bed to cover up that grungy old mattress or slam the bedroom door shut so that the she cannot see the old thing? Of course you do, because you dread the sound of her...tsk, tsk, tsk.

4. When you sit on the bed does it creak or moan? Or heaven forbid, Does it squeal like a pig on its way to the butcher?

5. Are you fighting for bed space with your life partner? Are you losing?

6. Here is the whammy! Was your mattress a hand-me down from your parents?

Well, If you answered one of these with a yes it is probably time for a new mattress set.

Shopping For That Cozy Comfy Bed of Your Dreams

Just think, there are 24 hours in a day and we generally spend 6-8 hours of that day in a bed sleeping. That is about twenty-five percent of the average person’s day, this makes mattress shopping a little more interesting when put in the perspective of how much time we actually spend in bed.

Today’s mattress ensembles are built for support and comfort. They can come equipped with fancy standard tops or the ever popular pillow top. The pillow top can be so high one feels as if they are sleeping on a bed of marshmallows. This can be a good thing or a bad thing. Each person has different support needs in a bed, some prefer firm while others prefer a softer foundation. But the only sure fire way to find your perfect mattress is to get out and test a few.

What To Look For In A Quality Mattress

Durability

Make sure the materials are high quality and put together well, this will greatly determine how long a new mattress will provide comfort and support.

Soft or Firm

Which one is right for you? The only way to determine what is right for you is to personally test the mattress. Lie down in the mattress shop and give several mattresses a try. Do not rely on the label, one man’s idea of firm may not be your idea of firm.

Warranty

Look for a warranty with a product guarantee of at least 10 years. The warranty should replace a defective mattress and protect your against poor quality products.

Space

If you are a single person sleeper remember you still need move to turn around in the bed. Purchase the largest size you room can hold and you can afford. If your teenage son is going to be six feet tall it would not make sense to buy a twin bed. His feet will eventually hang off the end.

If you sleep with a partner purchase at least a queen size or king size. Both of you need room for comfort and movement during sleep, this really cannot be achieved with a double bed. It really is just too small.

The Happy Shopping Process

1. Take your sleeping partner with you. If two are planning to sleep on the bed then two should be shopping for the bed.

2. Wear comfortable clothes and wear shoes that can easily be removed. Yes, you will need to lie down on the bed full body to get the best feel for the mattress.

3. Read all labels on mattresses you are interested in purchasing and discover all the product features and warranty feature before you make a purchase decision.

4. Take of your shoes ( It is a good idea to wear clean sock that day!) and lie down and stay there for a while. If this embarrasses you then ask your life partner to lie down first. Lying down a few seconds will not give you a clear idea on how the mattress feels. Take your time and decide if it is comfortable and if there is enough room for you and your partner to move around without bumping into each other all the time.

5. Shop at a store you trust. Call first, if they seem helpful over the phone, than maybe you will receive a helpful salesperson at the store.

6. Shop for the best quality you can afford. This does not mean the most expensive on the floor, just the highest quality.

Last but not least….

Ask the sales person for free delivery and free disposal of your old mattress. I do not recommend giving away a mattress that is really old. It could harm the recipients back and can possibly be a fire hazard if it was manufactured before 1973.

Thanks for reading and happy shopping!
