| lazlo9's Full Review: Sony SAT-HD100 Multi-Satellite Tuner |
I waited for over a year for a high definition receiver to go with my HDTV ready wide-screen tv that was worth it... and though this might have a couple rough edges... this is pretty amazing. Sony has found a way to integrate Directv and UHF antenna feeds together with out making users switch inputs. That is a major luxury. And when the HD broadcasts come in that are absolutely stunning! I watched an NBA playoff game the other night that was broadcasting at 1080 and it was as if the game took place in my room. Sound comes in perfectly (depending on the broadcasting source, of course!).
Channel surfing is a little slow because the Receiver has to keep switching between all the different feed types, so that takes a little while to get used to. Also, the cooling fan on the receiver is always on and makes a low humming sound all the time. This is the most annoying thing about it. I actually have been pulling the plug on the unit when I'm in the room and not watching TV because it is rather distracting.
That being said... I am happy with the unit. This is not the end of the line for HD receivers, but it's far enough down it to make it a true gem for a Home theater enthusiast. This is not for everybody. My wife could care less about it, which is why I kept my original RCA Directv receiver hooked up for her ($5 a month additional to keep her happy). But when a HDTV movie comes on, she seems to gravitate towards the sofa to watch it with me. You can't help but watch such a perfect picture!
And don't believe the hype, there's quite a bit of programming on TV that's broadcasting in HD format.
If you're dying for HDTV... it's finally here!
