Just Do It.....Okay?

Oct 26 '01

The Bottom Line Tips? Kids, family and you...do you care to live a bit longer? If you do at least think about quitting and read our stories.

I lost my Step-mother to cancer 2 years ago in November. She smoked. I lost a friend to breast cancer 3 years ago and burried her the day before my 30th birthday. She smoked. I heard of a death in my friends family, the father was smoking in bed and the house burned down...with him in it. He Smoked.
There are millions of people dying out there...and they smoke.
So .... how did I quit?
How long did I smoke for?
How much did I smoke?
What makes me better than the rest?
How can you quit?
I quit cold turkey...it is highly recommended by doctors all around the world and by me.
I tried the "patch"...I tried the "gum" and I found that both really did not work for me. The patch maybe for a while, and then when it ws all said and done, one major crisis in your life and you are finding yourself enjoying the habit again.
I smoked since I was 13 until I was 30 ( I am 32 now ) I have a highly addictive personality and I was drawn to the smoking by colorful cigarettes that my mother got from Hawaii, boy I was "cool". I ended up at about a pack a day in the end ( not much for some, but I also had asthma from the time I was 12 years old ).
One day after the death of my step mother I thought to myself about the stories I have heard over the years...you have all heard the story of the reformed smoker haven't you? The one who smoked for thirty years 3 packs a day and then quit cold turkey??? Yes, that's the one!! :0 I thought "how did they do that?" and I also thought "how can I do that?"
Well here is how you do it...
Do it gradually ( My own epinion )...I went from 25 smokes to 24...the next week 23 the next week I decided to take a plunge and went down to 13 ( cut back by ten...that was hell ).I stayed at the 13 for 2 weeks, then went down to 10...that was not too bad, then went down to 9 the next week and then 8 etc....then all of a sudden I was at five and stuck! Did I really want to quit?
That is what you have to ask yourself before starting...DUH!!
I said to hell with it and quit cold turkey...I would not have quit had I kept up the cutting down part of it...it was working, but if I went out with friends I would smoke a little more that night...that was cheating myself and my health.
Then I thought of the benefits of quitting...hhhmmmmm...more money for me and the kids. I could put one of those signs on my door that say "no smoking" I could maybe breath a little easier and my kids could too ( if it wasn't too late for them with the second hand smoke ) and I also thought that maybe it was true ...it wasn't that bad...except for a few days ( maybe ten like me ).
So I did it cold turkey and guess what? I must have really wanted to quit! :) It has been 2 years. My asthma is a tiny bit better and the doctor said my lungs sound lovely to the ear! I eat normally and have not gained any weight due to this non-smoker thing..and I still hang out with friends that smoke..I just give them a hard time now and it feels good. I have more energy and I can put that energy to good use on my kids...who also like the fact that mommy is feeling good, doing less yelling and more playing...and I can afford to take them out once a month somewhere special with the money I save each month from not smoking ( it is the non-smoking fund in our house )
I think you can do this if you feel strongly about quitting....but your mind has to have a lot of good reasons...I am sure you can think of a few hundred when you put your mind to it:)
