Why would I review an online service that has so many reviews? Simple - I was lucky enough to win a gift card to www.jr.com (J & R Music and Computer World Online Store) for the first review sweepstakes. If you are new here and want to get in on this go to the member center.
I wanted to surprise my husband with a father’s day gift but that didn’t happen. Instead I gave him the card and we bought a fax machine. One of the reasons I didn’t buy him anything is because I was totally overwhelmed by the amount of items sold at J & R and didn't really know what he wanted.
What is this site?
J & R whose logo is “bring people & technology together” is an online store that sells items under the categories of audio, videos, cameras, computers, software, office, housewares, travel, movies, video games, and music. They have a storefront in New York City which is shown on the very busy first page. From the website "J&R brings the best in electronics, computers and more directly to you, from a company you can trust. From our stores in Downtown New York City, J&R has been providing customers with a combination of price, selection, security, and service for over 30 years. We are unique in the world of retailing -- a megastore with the personal touch of your local retailer, a family-owned business with a reputation that spans the globe."
Among many other links on the first page I found top searches on J & R, a clearance and rebate area, policies including shipping and order status. When Mr. .com decided on a fax machine I went back to the site and found it as quick to load and easy to navigate as the first time in spite of being overwhelmed by the number of products. It helped that I knew what I was looking for!
The Purchase:
I typed in fax machines in the search box and found 18 items. The fax machine is being used in our home office. We don’t get or send faxes very often but there is always the time that someone asks “Do you have a fax machine?” and we can now say “Yes.”
I was able to find them by price, best sellers, brand and title. We also had a price range in mind (under $100) and wanted a phone. We narrowed it down to two using the best sellers, epinions and Jon. (Thank you again.) and when we saw free shipping and a $10 rebate, we put the fax machine in our cart.
J & R accepts Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express.
We were told that we would receive an e-mail when the order ships, with tracking information where available.
Products can be returned or exchanged within 30 days, subject to a return authorization from J&R.
Shipping costs for orders besides music and movie orders are based on weight or dimensional weight (determined by the actual size of the box), whichever is greater. There is a minimum charge per order of $5.95 for ground shipping. It will cost you $9.95 for two day air and one day air is $19.95. As I said we had free shipping but a similarly priced and size fax machine that doesn’t offer free shipping would cost $6.95.
Music and movie items are shipped for $2.95 for standard shipping for the first item and $1.00 for each additional one. Rush shipping is $5.99 with $.60 for each additional title.
Did we get the fax machine and my rating?
A conformation e-mail was sent that said the machine had been shipped and we were given a tracking number. We were away when it arrived but looked at the tracking number. We saw that it arrived Thursday. We ordered it on Sunday and was told that it ships in one or two days. Having it arrive on Thursday was very nice to see. However we didn’t actually know it arrived until we got home on Saturday. It arrived in a large box and was packaged very well. The machine was in perfect condition.
Buying from J & R was very easy. The prices seem to be good and with free shipping and rebates on many products you can get a good deal. I think we did. A 5 star experience.
