My Top 10 Favorite "Chick Flicks"

Dec 27 '01

The Bottom Line I love "chick flicks". The more predictable, the better they are.

My favorite movie genre is romantic comedies. If I like a romance movie, I can watch it over and over and over. I never get tired of them. I get disappointed when they don't get together at the end. After all, how can it be a romance if they aren't romantic at the end?

10) Braveheart - I know, I know. How can this ultimate macho, dirty, fighting, chop your head off movie be listed as a "chick flick"? The decision to add this to my list was made when my husband and I were arguing if "Braveheart" was better than "Gladiator". I think that "Braveheart" beats "Gladiator" because I like the story line so much better. My husband thinks that the whole "save a flower from your love", "dig her out of the grave", "lust for her your whole life" thing is too corny, reinforcing why I have this on my list. When the princess swoons in the movie when she hears the story of undying love, I think all woman swooned at the idea of Mel Gibson loving them for eternity. The perfect combination of "chick flick" and ultimate "guy movie" makes this a great movie to watch again and again.

9) The Wedding Singer This movie has two of my favorite elements, Drew Barrymore and it is set in the 80's. I grew up in the 80's and all of the music and funky clothes make this movie hilarious, along with a little help from singing Adam Saddler. "The Wedding Singer" also has one of the all time best on screen kisses when Drew kisses Adam to show what she means by "church tongue". A great little movie where the good guy gets the girl and the terrible ex-fiance gets what he deserves. I watched this movie the night before my own wedding and it will always have special meaning to me.

8) Life is Beautiful This WWII concentration camp story can only be described as Beautiful. The father's never ending quest of making his son and wife's life a little better in the middle of death is so touching. Tears came to my eyes when he played his wife's favorite opera loud enough for her to hear, letting her know that they were alive and of course, that they would always love her. This movie is the only one on my list that I have not watched over and over because it makes me too emotional, but a movie that shouldn't be missed none the less.

7) Sabrina I saw this movie with Harrison Ford, Julia Ormond and Greg Kinnear a few years ago when it came to cable. I proceeded to watch it every time that it was on. A great Cinderella story where the servant's girl gets the rich guy. I love Harrison Ford as the tough business guy who can not help but fall in love with the innocence of Julia Ormond. I have since seen the original "Sabrina" with Humphrey Bogart and Audrey Hepburn, but I still like this modern adaptation better.

6) Love Affair Speaking of adaptations, this remake of "An Affair to Remember" is a great movie. Real life husband and wife, Warren Beatty and Annette Benning, have wonderful on-screen chemistry. Katherine Hepburn has a memorable cameo as the all-knowing aunt; the type of person that you meet and feel that your life is better for knowing them. Even though I know how it will end, my heart always skips a beat when Beatty opens up her bedroom door at the end and sees his painting hanging on her wall. I have recently watched this movie again about a dozen times for the wonderful scenery of Moorea in French Polynesia.

5) The Truth About Cats and Dogs A cute British guy and a dog on roller skates. How couldn't you love this movie? A great story where the good guy is actually a good guy and the ugly duckling gets him in the end. This a very funny movie with some memorable lines "You should love your pets, not LOOVVVE your pets."

4) While You Were Sleeping I normally don't like Sandra Bullock because she always seems to be the same character. But in this movie, the quirky, funny, cute girl character is perfectly suited for her. The man that she has loved from a far is injured and she pretends to be his fiancee while he is in a coma. And then she falls in love with the family and the not so gorgeous brother, played by Bill Paxton, making this a great formula for comedy and romance.

3) Never Been Kissed Another Drew Barrymore movie that has flashbacks to the 80's. I have seen this movie so many times, my husband finally bought a copy on DVD for me. Drew plays a high school nerd that grows up to be a nerd who goes under cover at a local high school as a student. She falls in love with her young, hot English teacher who is also in love with her, but of course, feels betrayed when he learns that she is actually a reporter. This falls into my "the more predictable the better" category, because he obviously see the error of his ways and gives Drew her first real kiss at the end.

2) You've Got Mail Many people like "Sleepless in Seattle" better, but I like the interaction between the two characters so much more in this movie. There are too many great things about this movie it is hard to mention them all. The great cast, the scenery and places of New York City, the wonderful "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" theme, Tom Hanks allowed to improvise and a Nora Ephron script; you just can't go wrong.

1) When Harry Met Sally And finally, my all time favorite "chick flick" of them all. I saw this movie the summer that I got out of high school and wept while Billy Crystal told Meg Ryan how he loved all of her quirks. "If someone would only love my quirks like that" I thought. It is 12 years later and I still love this movie, probably because I found someone that loves my quirks. All of the unforgettable scenes, (Meg's orgasm, Sunday underpants, the four part split screen, the great stories of how couples met) the wonderful sound track, Billy's improvised scene at the museum, "I'd like to partake of your PEECCAANNN PIIIIEE" and the moment when Harry realizes that he has been in love with Sally all of these years and runs through the streets of New York City, make this one of those movies that is bound to become a classic.

Thanks for reading.
