Digital Camera VS. 35mm + Scanner!!! WHO WINS?

Dec 28 '01

The Bottom Line Read my review to find out about digital cameras versus 35mm cameras alongside scanners.

Today, digital cameras are very popular on the photography market. I'm really into photography. I like to take pictures of things, scan them, send them to friends or just look at them on my computer. I have sent many of my pictures to friends, and they all say: "You must have spent a fortune on your digital camera!" Well, you know what, I don't use a digital camera. I was able to use them for projects though, so they were loaned to me. Well, I was able to use some different digital cameras, some cheap ones, and some ones that costed quite a lot. But, what do I use for my own personal picture use? I use a Canon Sure Shot 80 35mm camera that costed me $60, and I use a Canon CanoScan FB620U scanner. All of this costed me less than $150, and the quality that I get is simply superb! In my opinion, Canon makes the best equipment, and the Canon digital camera that I used was great. But the camera that I used most often was a Kodak DC-265 digital camera, and I was very happy with the quality. But anyway, here's the information that you should know.

-Overall Digital Quality-
*This can be a very intense market place. I have seen some CHEAP digital cameras, and the pictures that they took looked simply terrible. Their quality was nothing compared to a cheap 35mm camera. Then I saw other digital cameras in the $500+ range, and their quality was much better, but it can get very pricey. A very popular choice now for digital cameras is Sony. You can use 3.5" floppy disks on some models, or you can also use the now popular Sony memory sticks. However with the memory sticks, it limits use mainly to Sony products. Plus these sticks can be quite expensive. Well, let's look at the overall quality. Different cameras handled differently in different areas. Some had better color quality outdoors, and some had worse. Some had unrealistic colors, while some looked better.

*So in this aspect, you have to be very careful. I have also read reviews on some digital cameras. Some of them performed the best in one area, but the worst in others. I personally find this to be a very confusing market to some degree. So when you choose a digital camera, you should be very careful.

-PROS-

*No picture developing neccessary, this can save you money and time.

*Can edit images easily on your computer.

*You can put all your pictures onto your computer as easy as 1-2-3 without a picture scanner.

*Many have built-in LCDs which allows you to keep or trash a photo, there won't be any unpleasant surprises. So you can always take the PERFECT picture :-)

*Some people think that digital cameras are more fun to use, but that's just them.

-CONS-

*The performance for many digital cameras varies. Some can perform very well in one aspect, and terribly in another.

*Price is another major factor, in order to get a nice camera, you really have to pay for it.

*Some can hold very many images, and some can hold few.

*Sony uses memory sticks which can make things versatile if you own other Sony products such as a VAiO computer, and if you don't, it can get harder.

*Some lower-end digital cameras give poor color resolution.

*Digital cameras can be more difficult to use for electronically-challenged people.

-Overall Quality For 35mm And Scanner-
*This is the older market, 35mm cameras have been around for a very long time. So now, you can buy a much cheaper one at a much lower price. I have seen some Canon 35mm cameras (I own one) that can easily be found for under $100 that will give you superb picture quality. As you can tell by now, I am simply in love with Canon's imaging product quality. They are simply of superb quality and price! Well, I managed to couple along a newer Canon Sure Shot 80 with a new cheap scanner that I just bought, I managed to get a Canon CanoScan FB620U for a mere $90. This costed me around $150 in total. This is how I scanned most of my pictures, and everyone was very surprised with the picture quality that I was able to get. It goes beyond the quality of any digital camera that I have used that falls below the price of $750! The Kodak DC-265 was capable of getting close, but still wasn't quite there.

*If you buy the right 35mm and scanner, you can have the supreme photo machine for under $200! I would highly recommend Canon, it is one name that you can trust. You don't have to spend a whole lot of money to get superior quality pictures on your computer! All you need to do is spend a little on getting your pictures developed, and spend a little time scanning them (Not too bad, really), and you've got yourself priceless moments on your very own computer in their true colors!

-PROS-

*The main pro to this is that you save a lot of money compared to buying a good quality digital camera.

*The colors that you get from a good 35mm camera and scanner are much more realistic and vivid compared to most digital cameras in the less than $750 price range.

*35mm cameras can be much easier to use for the electronically-challenged people.

*Did I mention it's much cheaper?

-CONS-

*You can't really see the picture you took until it has already been developed.

*Getting the pictures can be annoying, and sometimes costly.

*Scanning pictures can take a while.

*Some people don't know how to use scanners properly leading to really BAD pictures.

-The Verdict-
*It's really for you to decide what you want. If you have the money to spend, you can buy yourself a great digital camera, which can be easier to use overall, and you'll also save a lot of time because you won't have to develop film or scan the pictures. However, analog cameras can be much cheapers, and give you much better picture quality than most digital cameras. Personally, I prefer to just scan my own pictures, and the quality nicely surprises everyone. Even people with good quality digital cameras are quite surprised with the quality I receive at such a low cost. Well, it's time for you to research, and decide! Good luck!
