| amelia_walpole's Full Review: Dawn Direct Foam Dishwashing Detergent |
I think I speak for most people when I say this: I hate doing dishes. I hated doing dishes when I was a kid, and I still dont like to do them now as an adult. In all the places Ive lived, if an automatic dishwasher was present, I used it regularly. Now in my cozy apartment I have a dishwasher but it hardly works. Often I have to wash my dishes *after* washing my dishes. So I was faced with having to get back into washing by hand. Its much easier if I dont let dishes pile up in the sink, but thats a very easy habit to fall back into. So in my quest to make dish washing more interesting and a tad bit easier, I decided to give Dawn Direct Foam a try. I had seen commercials for this product before, but I was skeptical that it worked. No matter how many dishwashing soaps Ive tried, Ive always ended up with greasy water and glasses that still retain soap residue no matter how many times I rinse. So I broke down and purchased the Dawn Direct Foam in Fresh Rapids (the blue bottle), and a brand new sponge to go with it.
Packaging and Contents
The Dawn Direct Foam bottle is about six and a half inches tall and about three inches wide at the widest point. There is a pump set in the top of the bottle that foams up the liquid inside and expels it when you press down on it. I purchased Fresh Rapids but there are two other flavors- Lime Surge and Citrus Kick. Their bottles are yellow and orange, respectively. Since the bottles are heavily tinted, I dont know what the color of the soap liquid is. But I think its probably clear. The foam is white and very light to the touch. The Dawn logo and pump are both in blue and white. Each 13.5 fl oz. bottle contains about 250 pumps. And these pumps go a loooooong way.
My Experience
I had a sink load of dishes waiting for me when I got home from the store with the Dawn Direct Foam, so I decided to go to work. I rolled up my sleeves, checked the instructions on the bottle, wet my sponge, and primed my pump. One full pump of the foam got my sponge nice and lathery.
I started with a dirty plastic bowl. In my experience, plastic has been the worst when it came to washing grease off. Usually my plastic bowls are still slick after a good hot water bath. I was pleasantly surprised; the foam worked wonders. The already thick lather got even thicker as I rubbed the sponge over the surfaces of the bowl. The foam was thick enough that it didnt go sliding off. I scrubbed-a-dub-dub until the food particles were free of the bowl, and then I rinsed it off in warm running water. In the past Ive have had to rinse my dishes two or three times to get the excess soapy residue off, but I didnt have to do that here. A few seconds of rising and my plastic bowl was squeaky clean. My new sponge wasnt greasy and neither was the left-over foam. I was floored.
I washed the rest of my dishes the same way, both plastics and glass: scrub-a-dub-dub, warm water rinse. The results were all the same. My dishes were squeaky clean, shiny, I didnt have to rinse them over and over again, and I smelled no soapy residue on the surfaces. I never had to use another pump of the foam either, which was another aspect that shocked me. The foam kept coming back and it was never greasy or dirty. I was thrilled. Suddenly dish washing didnt seem so tedious anymore. I had a great product that worked and meant less time spent scrubbing the dishes.
You can use the foam for hand washing as well as dish washing. It only takes a small amount of foam to wash your hands; a dot about the size of a dime does fine for me. Add a little water, and you can work up a really nice thick lather on your hands. And the soap rinses very easily in this case as well.

Product Claims
Dawns official website at Homemadesimple.com makes the following claims about their Dawn Direct Foam. My comments are in italics.
- Uses a breakthrough, foaming technology. (Im no scientist, but I know good foam when I see it. This product is unlike any Ive ever used before.)
- Absorbs 10X more grease than regular dish cleaners. (Definitely. None of the grease or food particles transferred from one dish to another.)
- Uses less water. (True again. Even when I thought the foam was kaput, all I had to do was add a tad more water to the sponge. The foam came back again. I didnt have to use hardly any water on the whole to get good results.)
Usage and Tips from Dawn.com
Once again, my comments are in italics.
-Pump one dose of foam onto your damp sponge. (Believe it or not, one pump was all I needed to do my sink load of dishes.)
-For best results, dont pump the foam into a sink of water. (Ive heard a few people trying this method anyway, some with good results, but I didnt try it and I probably wont. The foam worked well enough for me, so I see no need to use a sink full of water.)
-Swipe the pump nozzle to get every last drop of foam. (The foam is super-concentrated. Every little bit counts.)
-Dont wash your dishes under running water or submerged in water. (Youll water the foam down. It works perfectly well on its own with minimal water.)
Finish
I can think of absolutely nothing wrong at all with this product. It performs as claimed, cleans my dishes perfectly, is easy to use, and rinses clean away. The only issue I had with the Direct Foam is that I wasnt sure the correct method to rinse my dishes. I rinsed them in warm running water, but this can be wasteful to do often. I was concerned that if I tried to rinse each dish in a sink full of water, the concentrated foam would contaminate the rinse water and I couldnt get the dishes soap-free. Dawns websites states that you can rinse your dishes normally, so perhaps I had nothing to worry about. In any case, I highly recommend this product if you wash your dishes by hand.
