| elzora's Full Review: Glade Scented Oil Candles - All Scents |
Sometimes we here in Alaska are a little bit behind the Lower 48 states when it comes to stores having new items out on their shelves. So it is with the Glade Scented Oil Candles. I saw a display of these today at my local grocer, and after smelling the Glistening Snow scent, I had to buy it. It wasn't cheap either - $6.99, on sale! There was one glass holder and two candle refills in the package. This scent reminded me of bayberry, the scent that many Christmas candles and sprays have. In fact, the packaging looked pretty Christmas-y, with pine boughs, red berries and an ornament in the picture. There was a gold bow around the package as well, so I guess Glade is getting their holiday merchandise out early this year. What I found very convenient was the fact that Glade put three 3/16" holes in the plastic top of the packaging so that I could smell the scents before deciding which one I liked the best. I had a hard time deciding between the Spiced Rose and Vanilla and the one I bought (Glistening Snow.
Description of the Oil Candles
The glass holder is 2 1/2 inches high, and the shallow bowl is 4 inches in diameter. Mine is made of a clear, smoky colored glass, that is very sturdy and thick - and I think the holder is quite attractive. It has an hour glass shape to it, but the bottom section has a smaller "bowl" than the top section that holds the candles. I have seen similar designs at Party Lite parties for much more money.
Inside the holder is a silver metal liner, (which Glade refers to as a warming plate), with swirl designs engraved into it. In the very center is a little hollowed out area that is magnetized. The triangular shaped candles are a bit larger than tea lites, mine is green. My set came with two candles. The bottom of the candle has a metal section that fits into the magnetized hole. This prevents the candle from moving around, and it will always be exactly in the center of the holder. A very unique design, and I really was very impressed.
The wick in the candle is strange looking, it has a cotton wick in the center, (which you light), but there are also two metal wicks sticking up 1/8-1/4 inches high on either side of the cotton wick. The purpose of this is to heat the metal wicks, which will in turn heat up the metal plate the candle rests on. The candle slowly melts into a pool of scented oil. As it melts, you can see the metal shape of the wick that used to be inside the candle, it resembles the shape of a flame. The oil never reaches the glass portion of the holder, it just fills up the metal warming plate in the bottom of the holder. When the candle has burned for 2 1/2 - 3 hours, and the holder is cooled off, you simply remove the metal "clip" and discard it. The candle will extinguish itself when the candle is completely used up.
I kept an eye on the progress of my last Scented Oil Candle, and it took almost 30 minutes before the candle had melted into a complete pool of scented oil. Once the flame went out, so did the scent. It lasted three full hours, however, so it is a nice touch when we are entertaining or having company over.
The Scent
The Glistening Snow scent (that I have), gives off it's fragrance immediately upon lighting the candle. The more it melts, the stronger the scent becomes. I use it in my living room, and I can smell the wonderful smells of bayberry and spice all over the downstairs of my home. The scent is strong enough to give the room a nice smell, without being too over powering and strong. Some odors actually give me a headache, but this Glade product did not.
Other Uses
I like the shape and color of the glass holder so much, that I use it to hold other candles. I especially like to put my ball shaped candles into this holder - they look nice and go together very well. The Glade company cautions not to use any other waxes, oils or fuels in this holder, but I have had no problems using it as a simple candle holder.
Cautions
* This would not be good to have within reach of children, the metal parts become very hot and a child (or adult) could burn themselves.
* Many candle companies tell you to trim the wicks of their candles, but not with this set - the box clearly states that the wicks should not be trimmed.
* This candle is for indoor use only.
* Never burn candles unattended.
* Never touch or move the unit while the candle is in it's liquid state, some could spill and burn you. Although the glass container is only half full of oil when it is completely melted, the hot oil could still spill out if you attempted to move it.
Cleaning The Holder
All that is needed to clean this holder is simple soap and water. Gently scrub the bottom of the candle holder with a damp cloth, and rub the area until the residue is gone.

Final Thoughts
I love scented candles, and while I really liked this candle, I feel that the price is quite high. I can burn my scented candles for a lot longer than 3 hours, so I really feel that my scented candles are cheaper to use and give about the same result. I will continue to purchase refills when they are on sale, but at this time I have not seen any refills, just the kits containing the glass holder and two candles. Hopefully I can find the refill candles somewhere locally.
Health Concerns?
In August of 200, the journal of Environmental Health Perspectives addressed the issue of human exposure to 1,4 DCB (also known as paradichlorobenzene or pDCB), stating that it may cause modest reductions in lung function.
*From the Glade website, concerning this health hazard:
Unfortunately in many news reports, images of Glade products are used to illustrate the study leaving viewers with the false impression that GladeŽ contains this ingredient. It does not, said Kelly M. Semrau, Vice President Global Public Affairs and Communication for SC Johnson.
None of the glade products contain pDCB.
