When I place an Online order there is usually little fanfare associated with the transactions especially when reading reviews about the website as this generally gives me an overall idea as to what awaits if I make a purchasing decision. A few weeks ago, I made an online purchase with eddiebauer.com. I’m extremely familiar with Eddie Bauer and its marketing noting it was established in 1920. I have worn their Cargo pants and Khakis on and off for approximately ten or so years, spending the last three shopping at their outlet store in Dawsonville, Georgia. Since I was out of town for two weeks and had forgotten my Khakis, I decided to do a little late night shopping bringing Eddie Bauer into my hotel room via my laptop.
Finding the website is pretty easy, I’ve never been one to plug the name into my web browser preferring instead to Google eddiebauer.com. Since it is a sponsored link, clicking on their website at the top of the page is easy. There are several things worth noting when leaving the brick and mortar store and shopping in cyberspace. Naturally you don’t get the personal greeting; “Welcome to Eddie Bauer” however you will get to the site options are plentiful. I clicked on "Shop Down for Men" took a quick look at the Down Travel Throw Set that is regularly sold for $59.00 however with is on sale for $29.00 with a purchase. One of the nice things about rolling your computer mouse over an item is the different view you get.
Finding their casual pants was easy, and sorting through the different styles is simple. I selected the Complete Cargo Pants. I’m familiar with this style and I have had a pair for six months with no problems. After selecting them I chose the regular Khaki color for $59.50. Now it was time for me to check out, and claim my pants so I clicked the blue "Add to Shopping Bag" button and much to my surprise, nothing happened. Then I observed those dreaded words, "Due to popular demand, this item is on back order until 12/29/2006". A bit discouraged, I opted for plan B. This time selecting the brown Ankle Riding Boots for $118.00 this fortunately was in stock. There is a $3.00 handling charge and the standard drop box for calculating delivery and tax. The drop box calculates each state as Texas came out to $9.12 sales tax and Express Plus delivery is $22.00 dollars which brought my bill to a grand total of $153.07. I provided my billing address and credit card information without any problems. After getting my receipt page and tracking information the only thing left to do was track the order. I placed my order on Sunday night and received my boots on Wednesday evening. The boots were in perfect condition and fit true to size.
Final thoughts:
Like most Online companies there are a host of deals and specials making it hard to stick to my original purpose of visiting the site. Usually this would be a problem for me in a brick and mortar store, but the information provided on the website, and the nice looking pictures of the items felt more like window dressing instead of a pushy sales person trying to make a deal. I really like the fact that you don’t have to set up an account to make a purchase from this site. I’ve always despised setting up accounts trying to remember various passwords. My online experience was pretty good my only complaint was the fact that they did not have what I wanted and expect me to wait until December 29th. As much as I like going to the mall, I know I will be in one of their brick and mortar stores if not the Outlet before that date arrives.
Overall, I liked Eddiebauer.com no hassle ordering process, and I did not experience any problems that warranted intervention from their customer service department. The graphical interface and shopping cart merged flawlessly seamlessly integrating my funds from my credit card to my hotel room door. The high quality boots were delivered on time and fit well. In my book this easily surfs my Online shopping experience right into the 4 out of 5 star category, as I’m holding one star against them for not having the pants I wanted in stock. Now it’s time for me to try their Online Outlet store.
